Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) is one of the nation's leading research laboratories, housing large, state-of-the-art facilities such as the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider, the National Synchrotron Light Source II, and the Center for Functional Nanomaterials, and is the future site of the Electron Ion Collider. Stony Brook University is a partner, with Battelle Memorial Institute, in Brookhaven Science Associates LLC, which manages the Laboratory for the U.S. Department of Energy. Located less than 20 miles from campus, BNL provides execptional opportunities for collaborative research efforts.
Since 1998, Brookhaven Science Associates LLC (BSA) has held the prime contract for managing and operating Brookhaven National Laboratory for the Department of Energy. Formed as a partnership between Battelle Memorial Institute and The Research Foundation for the State University of New York (acting on behalf of Stony Brook University), BSA is responsible for the governance, leadership, and operations to ensure that BNL successfully achieves its mission to help ensure the nation's energy security.
Given Stony Brook's close proximity to BNL, our faculty and students represent the single largest external users of BNL facilities; access to thse facilities and BNL's scientific staff are important for many of Stony Brook's research programs and also for the vitality of the university's academic mission. BNL and Stony Brook share many joint faculty appointments, and numerous graduate students and postdocs regularly conduct their research at BNL.
The Office of Brookhaven National Laboratory Affairs serves as the primary liaison between Stony Brook and Brookhaven, coordinates joint activities, and manages joint faculty appointments. Its mission is to enhance the relationship between the two institutions by developing and supporting joint initiatives that bring faculty, students and research staff together in scientific, educational, and intellectual activities.
