STEM Adventures:
Bringing K-12 Students to Research Labs and Facilities
Riverhead High School
On April 10, students from the after-school Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) program at Riverhead High School visited the Advanced Energy and Research Technology Center (AERTC). The 16 eleventh grade students, led by their teacher Laiba Bilal, toured energy labs in the disciplines of battery storage, hydrogen, and combustion. Throughout the tour, the students asked questions of the researchers pertaining to their educational journey, why they chose their particular area of science, and what their day to day operations would look like.
Presented with Stony Brook University t-shirts from the Undergraduate Admissions Office, the students then asked questions about academics and student life. Joining the tour was Assistant Dean of the University Honors Program, Dr. Catherine Sherman, who runs the WISE program here at Stony Brook.
Of the visit, Ms. Bilal remarked,“The dedication and passion demonstrated by the team towards innovative energy research, education, and technology were truly commendable. Witnessing the amazing work being done at AERTC left a lasting impression on all of us.”
