STEM Adventures:
Bringing K-12 Students to Research Labs and Facilities 
Miller Place High School

Miller Place High School sent a cohort of five teachers and 44 students to Stony Brook University’s R&D Park on May 18. Led by Shannon Matura, a New York State Master Teacher, the group rotated throughout the labs of hydrogen, combustion, power electronics, and battery storage. Representing classes such as AP Physics, AP Biology, AP Chemistry and honors iterations, the students sought renewable energy applications of their advanced studies in foundational sciences. Student Ryan Michalski stated, "It was exciting to see what science looks like beyond high school.  Madison Amendola commented about real world applications, "It was a great opportunity to learn more about how scientific research is applied to the real world".

Afterwards, the visit shifted to the Center of Excellence in Wireless Information Technology (CEWIT), whereby both AI and robotic technologies  were approached in a hands-on capacity via the world’s largest virtual reality deck and the  Home of the Future. Following the scientific and technological exploration, lunch was sponsored by Joe Ambrosio of Unique Electric Solutions (UES), who spoke to the student group about electric vehicle technology and necessary skills for future educational and career pathways.
