Zinnia CapÓ Valdivia
PhD Candidate
Interests: Mexican drug history, state formation, border and periphery studies.
My field is drug history, focused on the northern México-US border, in the nineteenth and twentieth century. Broadly I am interested in the historical and socio-cultural construction of the relation between people and mood-altering substances. My current research is focused on how the Mexican state portrayed drugs and vices to its inhabitants in the late nineteenth-early twentieth century. The lens I use is the public education system to see how lessons that conflated morality, hygiene and civics were part of a grander state building project which tied nationalism to the rejection of certain vices.
