Dr. Devinder Mahajan Receives SUNY TAF Class of 2024 Award
Dr. Mahajan, professor of materials science and chemical engineering and director of the Institute of Gas Innovation and Technology (I-GIT), and his research team at Stony Brook University developed a single system for storage and release of blended hydrogen and methane that operates under near ambient temperature and pressure conditions. This system is able to overcome the significant challenges related to efficient storage and on-demand release of hydrogen.

New Drug to Control Pain Related to Cancer Treatment Originally Developed at Stony Brook Gets FDA Clearance
Six years ago Stony Brook University through the Research Foundation for the State University of New York licensed a promising technology to Artelo Biosciences that identified Fatty Acid Binding Proteins (FABPs) as drug targets of the body’s endocannabinoid system for a potentially promising way to treat pain, inflammation and cancer. Now the first one of these compounds has been cleared by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for human clinical trials.

Codagenix and Serum Institute of India Announce Commencement of First-in-Human Trial of a Single Dose, Intranasal Live Attenuated Vaccine for COVID-19
Codagenix, Inc., (the spinoff from the Stony Brook University), and the Serum Institute of India Pvt. Ltd. (SIIPL) announced that a Phase 1 clinical trial of COVI-VAC received regulatory approval by the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) and has commenced in London, UK. COVI-VAC is a single-dose intranasal, live attenuated vaccine against SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, that was shown to be safe and efficacious in preclinical animal studies. COVI-VAC was developed with Codagenix's Synthetic Attenuated Virus Engineering (SAVE) platform that uses synthetic biology to re-code the genes of viruses into safe and stable vaccines. COVI-VAC is designed to deliver a safe, live attenuated version of SARS-CoV-2 that may induce a more robust immune response and long-lasting cellular immunity against SARS-CoV-2 compared to other vaccines against the virus.

Codagenix and SBU’s Synthetic Attenuated Virus Engineering (SAVE) technology highlighted in the AUTM Better World Project
We are excited to announce that the article on Codagenix (a spinoff from Stony Brook University (SBU) based on Synthetic Attenuated Virus Engineering (SAVE) technology developed by Dr Wimmer et al has been recently published within the AUTM Better World Project.
The article highlights Codagenix using SAVE technology to successfully synthesize a readily scalable live-attenuated vaccine candidate against COVID-19.
The story has been submitted as a part of an AUTM award competition; it has been chosen to be showcased, and is now a candidate for the Better World Award.

The Top 100 Worldwide Universities Granted U.S. Utility Patents in 2019 has been announced by the National Academy of Inventors (NAI) and the Intellectual Property Owners Association (IPO). You can find a full list here. State University of New York has been ranked #40 in the list; according to the report, SUNY ranking increase from 2018 is +53 spots. The report uses data obtained from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and highlights the vital role patents play in university research and innovation.
Published annually since 2013, the report ranks the top 100 universities named as the first assignee on utility patents granted by the USPTO in the 2019 calendar year.

Key organizational changes in the Intellectual Property Partners (IPP) - March 2020
Donna Tumminello has been promoted to Associate Director of the IPP. In this role she is responsible for managing the technology licensing team and all activities related to invention evaluation, intellectual property strategy, and business collaborations for all new technology disclosures.
Additional technology licensing team changes are as follows:
Valery Matthys has been promoted to Licensing Associate. In her new role, Valery will be responsible for ensuring that promising inventions, developed by our faculty and graduate students, lead to public benefit through successful collaborations with the business community. Valery will also develop and lead two new Technology Commercialization Assistants in invention evaluation, marketing, and the administration of intellectual property.
James Martino has been promoted to Licensing Specialist. In his new role, James will be managing technology evaluation, patenting, marketing, and partnering for inventions developed by faculty and graduate students in the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences. James has also recently earned his U.S. Patent Agent certification as well as a Master's degree in Electrical Engineering.
IPP is also happy to welcome our two new Technology Commercialization Assistants, Harrison Seidner and Marcus Coleman, to the IPP technology licensing team. They both are being trained in the field of technology transfer and are supporting our efforts in evaluating, protecting, and marketing SBU’s inventions.

On February 5, 2020, the Intellectual Property Partners, in partnership with the Stony Brook Chapter of the National Academy of Inventors, held a panel discussion “Attracting and Collaborating with Industry Partners,” featuring seasoned SBU faculty entrepreneurs and technology developers, and moderated by Peter Donnelly, Associate VP for Technology Partnerships. Codagenix Inc. has closed a $20M Series B investment round - Jan. 13, 2020
Codagenix Inc., a startup launched by SBU assistant research professor Steffan Mueller and Farmingdale State College biology professor J. Robert Coleman, has closed a $20M Series B investment round. The funding will allow the synthetic biology company, which is a resident of Broadhollow Bioscience Park, to bring its respiratory virus and influenza vaccines closer to the marketplace, move its oncology program into Phase I clinical trials, and launch two new vaccine development programs targeting neglected public health challenges.

SuperClean Glass has won a PowerBridgeNY Ignition Grant - Dec. 17, 2019
A Stony Brook University start-up, SuperClean Glass, has won a $50,000 PowerBridgeNY Ignition Grant which can be applied to business start-up costs.
The company will use the funding to commercialize its patent-pending, self-cleaning technology that removes dust from solar panels and regains up to 95% of lost energy.

A Stony Brook University start-up, Akai Kaeru, executed an exclusive license agreement with The Research Foundation for the State University of New York to commercialize an interactive visualization software called the Data Concept Map which allows a user to view important multivariate data relationships simultaneously to assist with decision making.

A NY Center for Advanced Technology (CAT) funded by NYSTAR, Center for Integrated Electric Energy Systems (CIEES), is supporting industry-academia projects with NY companies, addressing technologies ranging from synthetic fuels to additive manufacturing and energy storage. All of these activities shared one common goal: realizing our vision of Long Island as the ‘Valley’ of renewable energy and smart grid.
