Historical Note
Excerpted from "Career as a Composer"; this autobiographical statement was part of
Isaac Nemiroff's application for sabbatical.
"If career as a composer implies professional recognition such as commissioned works, public performances, critical reviews, etc., it started for me with a commission to write music for modern dance in 1942. This venture culminated in a concert at the Cort Theater in New York City on April 26, 1948 given by Marie Marchowsky and Dance Company. The program consisted almost entirely of my music. That same year was my first appearance under the auspices of the International Society for Contemporary Music with my Sonata No .1 for violin and piano played by Broadus Erle and David Tudor. I believe that other such pertinent facts are performances at the Composers Forum, American Music Festival, programs at various colleges and elsewhere committed to the presentation of contemporary music, and other commissions, details regarding which are contained in the List of Works, Performances, and Publications. I was accepted to membership in the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers in 1964, and am listed in their Biographical Dictionary, 1966 edition; also listed in Baker's Biographical Dictionary of Musicians, fifth edition, 1958; and in the International Cyclopedia of Music and Musicians, ninth edition. Critical reviews of some of my works include:Violin and Piano Sonata and Oboe Concerto. New York Herald Tribune: 'The Adagio and Allegro from Nemiroff's Violin-Piano Sonata and his Concerto for Oboe and Strings each laid forth dark-hued contrapuntal material and pursued an incredibly complex, interweaving set of paths. The music both strongly lyrical and unrelievedly demanding of attention....and extraordinarily handsome and colorfully communicative opus." Lester Trimble, reviewer, 3/17/58....While I enjoy reviews such as the above I submit them not boastfully but, as an applicant for a fellowship, in the interest for presenting as much as I consider helpful for a proper assessment of my standing as a composer. Of equal pertinence do I consider the following excerpt from a letter written by Mr. Elliot Carter in response to a request from the Tenure and Promotion Committee of the University. Since Mr. Carter sent me a copy of his letter I feel free to quote from it. 'From what I have heard and seen of his music Isaac Nemiroff is a gifted and thoroughly competent composer. His work is impressive for its seriousness of purpose, its dedication to high musical intentions as well as its personal vision. It contains a wide variety of musical character which reveals a broad scope of human qualities and also an imaginative and skillful ring which indicates an awareness and sensitivity to the fundamental logic of music so important for a composer, (and not so commonly found today), especially for one who is a teacher."
Baker's Dictionary of Musicians (fifth edition, 1958) includes an entry for Dr. Nemiroff that provides additional information. He was born in Cincinnati, Ohio on February 16, 1912 and studied at the Cincinnati Conservatory and later with Stefan Wolpe at New York College of Music. He later went on to become an instructor at the School of Music of the Brooklyn Musical Society (1946-1948). From 1948-1952 he taught at the Contemporary Music School in NY. In 1952, he was appointed to the staff of the Greenwich House Music School. He was a founder of the music program at the newly established State University College on Long Island at Oyster Bay, where he taught until the campus was moved to Stony Brook. He spent the remainder of his career teaching at Stony Brook University until his death in 1977.
