Historical Note
Lester G. Paldy is Distinguished Service Professor of Technology and Society at Stony
Brook where he has taught since 1967. He currently serves as Faculty Director of the
Undergraduate College of Leadership and Service. He enlisted in the Marine Corps as
a private in 1952 during the Korean War after graduating from New York's Stuyvesant
High School and served for six years, earning a commission and rising to the rank
of Captain despite his lack of college training. He left the Marines in 1958 to enter
Stony Brook to study physics, graduating with its second class in 1962. After graduate
work at the University of Maryland and Hofstra University, he joined the Stony Brook
faculty in 1967. In 1991, he was a member of the U.S. Nuclear Proliferation Treaty
delegation to the United Nations. His Washington service also included appointments
as senior staff associate at the National Science Foundation and State Department
Visiting Fellow. He received teaching awards from the American Association of Physics
Teachers and served as editor in chief of the Journal of College Science Teaching
for 30 years. He is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science
and was decorated by the Central Intelligence Agency for his contributions to national
security and arms control.
