Provenance
Margherita Abbey Childs Fidao (granddaughter of Eversley Childs) was the steward of the family's collection of papers, photographs, textiles, and artifacts for many decades and ensured it was maintained and kept intact. Wendy Lockwood Fidao (great-granddaughter of Eversley Childs and daughter of Margherita Abbey Childs Fidao) donated the collection to Special Collections, Stony Brook University Libraries in three accessions: July 2015, April 2017, and June 2019.

Extent, Scope, and Content Note
The Eversley Childs Collection consists of papers, business records, photographs, maps, and textiles that document several generations of the Childs, Eversley, and Lockwood families of New York and Connecticut.

The collection is housed in 147 boxes which total 230 linear ft.

The date coverage spans nearly 250 years beginning in 1772 through the early 2000s.

Papers include family correspondence, land deeds, records of family business enterprises (Mica Roofing, Bon Ami, Technicolor), and real estate documents. Many family members had nicknames. These family names have been included in quotes whenever noted to assist researchers.

Genealogical research files provide context and background on family history.

Photographs are diverse in subject matter and range from scenery of the Childs’ family trips throughout the United States and abroad, to the local destruction in Crane Neck, New York resulting from the Hurricane of 1938, to oversized formal family portraits.

Map coverage includes the geographic areas of Crane Neck, Old Field, Setauket, and Flax Pond in New York.

Textiles in the collection encompass a broad range of items from the Childs' mansion in Crane Neck, New York and include Dorothy Shubrick Childs' wedding dress, decorative lace doilies, and table linens.

The papers of the Lockwood family include original accounting records and correspondence dating from the period of the American Revolution. Eliphalet Lockwood  (1741-1814) was a captain in the Connecticut Militia. The collection also includes papers of his son William S. Lockwood (1797-1886) and records of Lockwood family's shipping company.

Arrangement and Processing Note

Historical Note
The papers of Eversley Childs (1867-1953) and family members, residents of Crane Neck (New York), New York City, and Norwalk, Connecticut were donated by Childs’ great-granddaughter, Wendy Lockwood Fidao. Photographs, papers, maps, and textiles document several generations of the family.

The papers of the Lockwood family, from which Childs' wife Mary Shubrick Lockwood Childs (1867-1944) descends, include original accounting records and correspondence from the period of the American Revolution. Eliphalet Lockwood (1741-1814) was a nine-term member of the Connecticut House of Representatives from Norwalk in sessions between 1790 and 1796. He served as a captain in the Connecticut Militia during the American Revolutionary War.

The ancestors of the Childs family in the United States settled in the areas of Massachusetts, Connecticut, and New York beginning in the early 17th century. The name "Eversley" is a surname on Childs' maternal side. Laid in the family bible, located in the collection, was a paper with handwritten entries recording the births, deaths, and marriages of family members (it has been removed and placed in an archival envelope for preservation reasons). The earliest ancestor in America through Childs' paternal line was Benjamin Child (1620-1678) of England, who came to America and married Mary Bowen (1636-1707) of Wales and later Boston. They settled in Roxbury, Massachusetts, where he became prominent in the affairs of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. The couple had 10 children including youngest son John (1671-1754), the line from which Eversley Childs descends. Russell Childs (1803-1875) of Woodstock, Connecticut and Caroline Marrone (1810-1877), originally from England, were Childs’ paternal grandparents. They married and later settled in Brooklyn, New York. Russell Childs' brother was Gurdon Hicks Childs (1806-1895). Gurdon Hicks Childs' grain business in Manchester, Connecticut helped facilitate the establishment of Bon Ami.

Eversley Childs was born in Brooklyn, New York on February 5, 1867, the first born child of William Henry Harrison Childs and Maria Eversley. He completed his education at the Polytechnic School in Brooklyn and began a business career as an office helper with the US Twine and Net Company of New York City. He had also been shipping clerk at his father’s Mica Roofing Company and even before the death of his father, he was managing aspects of the family business. His professional work experience included working for Mica Roofing Company, the Barrett Company, and Allied Chemical and Dye; he was an early financial backer and director at Technicolor, Inc., the company and technology which gave film its vivid colors including the classic films The Wizard of Oz, Singing in the Rain, and The African Queen; for a period he took charge of LILCO; he was board member of Hamilton Trust, a division of Chase Bank; and he was director of the stationery company, Boorum & Pease of Brooklyn. Eversley sold Mica to the Barrett Company, retaining an interest and becoming chairman of the board. He later became associated with The Bon Ami Company, and its predecessor Childs and Childs (founded by his father and a cousin William Hamlin Childs). The Childs’ business offices in the early 1900s were located at 17 Battery Place in New York City - known today as the Whitehall Building.

On December 4, 1889, 22 year old Eversley married 22 year old Mary (Minnie) Shubrick Lockwood, daughter of Charles E. Lockwood, a wealthy New York physician. Nearly 1,000 guests attended the couple’s wedding. Eversley and Minnie lived in Brooklyn and Manhattan and Norwalk, CT and also had a summer home next to Eversley’s father in Sayville. On May 23, 1902, The Suffolk County News reported “Mr. Childs Buys Crane Neck.” The brief paragraph stated he purchased an extensive property on the sound shore of Long Island, including upwards of 350 acres on Crane Neck, almost directly north of Sayville. Later that year on December 5, 1902 the same paper announced Mrs. Child was packing up their home in Sayville for the new home in Crane Neck. The home in Sayville and land was sold around December 1904. Childs would later purchase even more land in Crane Neck increasing  his acreage to about 500.

There is scant documentation about the house structure, and information available in the published record does not reference sources. The collection includes original deeds for the land and buildings that date back to 1800. Surnames represented on these documents also mention neighbors with names quite well known in our community including Hawkins, Jones, Floyd, and Brewster.

By 1905, the Childs had three children: Dorothy Shubrick Childs (Dot), Eversley Childs, Jr., and William Henry Harrison Childs (Bill). Together, Eversley and Minnie travelled the world. They were both avid hunters; they hunted moose and bears. On September 5, 1902 The Suffolk County News wrote the couple was on a hunting trip in search of big game in the wilds of Canada...and the article stated "with all due respect, we hope that Mrs. Childs gets that moose." A month later on October 3, 1902 the same newspaper wrote, “Mrs. Childs who is an ardent sportswomen and a capital shot killed a fine bull moose the first day they were in the woods and later on her husband was equally as fortunate."

Eversley and Minnie were supporters of many philanthropic causes including: the Humane Society, the Young Womens Christian Association, the Suffolk County Historical Society, the New York Zoological Society, the American Museum of Natural History, the Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Sciences, and Audubon Society. On August 21, 1942, Eversley, Minnie, and Eversley Childs, Jr. gifted to the Salvation Army 34 acres in Crane Neck for use as a fresh air home for young children from infants to six years old. Named the “Dorothy Shubrick Childs Memorial” in honor of their late daughter and sister, the property included the house built for and given to Dorothy in 1912. Children from the Brooklyn Nursery and Childrens hospital would visit and stay in Crane Neck from May to early October.

Minnie passed away in 1944 at the couple's apartment at 11 East 68th St. In October 1952, son Eversley Childs, Jr. died unexpectedly at the age of 58. He was a real estate broker, a director at Technicolor with his father, and a trustee to many charitable organizations. With his passing, Eversley lost his son and most trusted confidant. In 1947, Eversely remarried, and would continue to live in New York City until his death in 1953.

Eversley Childs' legacy and impact on the Three Village Area include support of the Emma S. Clark Memorial Library, the St. Georges Golf and Country Club, improvements to the Stony Brook LIRR station house, development of roadways, the first public suggestion of a town park at West Meadow Beach, and gifting of the Neighborhood House in Setauket for community activities.

Eversely Childs died on December 20, 1953 at his home at 710 Park Avenue, New York, New York. He was 86 years old.
