Historical Note The Charles Henry Miller Collection consists of 44 print etchings of the artist's
"New York and Long Island Landscapes." Charles Henry Miller (1842-1922) was known
for his paintings of regional landscapes and bucolic nature scenes. Most of the etchings
in this collection were done by August Barry. Research suggests the prints were published
in New York, c. 1889. Subjects represented in the collection include: agriculture;
architecture; business and industry; community and events; daily life; environment
and nature; people; recreation and sports; transportation; and work and labor.
Charles Henry Miller (1842-1922) resided in Queens and East Marion, New York. A recipient
of many prestigious art awards and prizes, his works were exhibited around the world
in the late 19th century. Poet Bayard Taylor referred to Miller as “the artistic discoverer
of the little continent of Long Island.”
