Historical Note
In the early 1800s, land transfers in East Hampton, New York, were formalized through the execution of written deeds, which detailed the terms of the transaction, including the names of the parties, property description, and the sale price. These deeds required signatures from both the buyer and seller, and often needed to be witnessed to validate their authenticity. Once executed, the deed was recorded in the local county clerk’s office, in this case, the Suffolk County Clerk's office, which ensured that the transfer was publicly documented and legally recognized.

The process was shaped by both local customs and state laws, evolving from colonial practices. Property descriptions in deeds used landmarks and natural features to define boundaries, which was crucial in an era before precise surveying technology. While formal legal requirements provided a framework, local practices and community familiarity often influenced transactions, reflecting the close-knit nature of East Hampton's early 19th-century society.
