Supporting the University Community During Covid

Stony Brook Strong Logo

Like many offices in Stony Brook University, OEA is working hybrid - with a reduced socially distanced staff in our offices and working from home. It has not not impacted the fulfillment of our mission. We are still engaged in investigating complaints of discrimination, processing requests for accommodation, ensuring an equitable hiring process and developing programs to increase prevention and awareness. Although we may not be able to meet with you in-person at this time, we are still here to address any concerns you may have. Please contact oea@stonybrook.edu if you have any questions.

Everyone at OEA looks forward to when we will all be working and learning together in person again -- hopefully in the new academic year. We want you all to know that although OEA has not been able to physically be there in our offices in 201 Administration, we are still here - and will still be here - responding to your OEArelated needs - from complaint investigation to reasonable accommodation to
training - we have got you covered.

US Department of Education Update to Title IX

August 14, 2020, rules issued by the Department of Education, the agency of the Federal government responsible for Title IX enforcement, took effect. These regulations redefine the types of “sexual harassment” subjected to the Title IX investigation and adjudication process and changed the requirements for the Title IX process itself. In compliance with these regulations Stony Brook University has included a Title IX Grievance Policy & Procedure to supplement our Sexual Misconduct Policy and Procedure in the Code of Student Responsibility (CSR) issued in August 0f 2020.

The definitions of Sexual Misconduct at Stony Brook University and in our Student Code of Responsibility remain unchanged. Stony Brook University remains committed to addressing any violations of its policies. Only incidents falling within the Final Rule’s definition of sexual harassment will be investigated and, if appropriate, brought to a live hearing through the Title IX Grievance Policy and Procedure. Other incidents may be addressed within CSR Section VII. Sexual Misconduct Policy and Procedure.

For more information please visit OEA's Sexual Misconduct website or our Title IX webpage.
