As it is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, it is a good time to highlight SBU education and prevention efforts to combat sexual violence. As part of Stony Brook University's commitment to a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment for all students, employees, and patients, we are proud to offer training opportunities to increase awareness of sexual misconduct and how to report it.

The Office of Equity and Access administers multiple online programs addressing Sexual Misconduct prevention and awareness. Most notably our ReportIt suite of programs which

is a convenient self-paced option available 24/7. It ideal for individuals who prefer to learn at their own pace and on their own schedule. In addition, we are currently developing a new program specifically tailored to address issues of sexual misconduct in off-site programs such as off-campus research and study abroad.

In person sexual misconduct awareness and Title IX programming is included annually in our orientation programming for all incoming students. In addition we offer on-demand in-person or webinar programming for any department or unit can request training for faculty, students or staff. Student organizations are also encouraged to request programming. Whether in person or via zoom or OEA is happy to provide programming whenever any cohort in the University community invites us. Our students versions of ReportIt are designed to ensure that Stony Brook University students understand affirmative consent, can identify prohibited behavior, know how to report an incident, and that they understand what they can expect if they file or are identified as a witness in a reported incident. The programs also provide important information on confidential support resources that are available on and off campus. The version for mandated reporters includes information on when RAs, TAs, GAs and other student mandated reporters are required to report.

All of our Faculty and Staff ReportIt programs include an option Responsible Employee section which allows employees to self identify and participate in training to understand their obligation as Responsible Employees. For situations where an employee would like information outside of their annual ReportIt training, a stand alone version is also available.

CALLING ALL GRADUATE PROGRAMS

Studies demonstrate that Graduate Students are more like to experience sexual harassment from faculty and other University employees than undergraduate students. The same studies demonstrate that graduate students are even less likely to report an incident due to fear that retaliation could impact any future academic career.

To address this, OEA has redesigned programming for Graduate students. This program will supplement the ReportIt: Ending Sexual Misconduct program and will focus on:

  • Employment-based sexual harassment
  • Stony Brook University's Policy on Relationships
  • Responsibilities as a Mandated Reporter

The goal of this program is to ensure gradaute students are aware of Stony Brook University's prohibition of all forms of sexual harassment in the workplace, including the pursuit of a romantic or sexual relationships between instructor-student, supervisor-employee, mentor-intern and all situations where a power imbalance exists.

OEA has been providing in-person sexual misconduct prevention and awareness programming to graduate programs on request every fall for many years and we would like to increase the number of participating departments. If you are interested in scheduling a session for your graduate students this fall please email oea_training@stonybrook.edu.
