Professor Mar is the founding director of the Philosophy Department Logic Lab and founding director of Stony Brook University’s Asian American Center Bridge, which was the catalyst for Stony Brook University’s Charles B. Wang Asian American Center. He is currently serving on CAPRA (Committee on Academic Priorities and Research Activities) and is a Commissioner on the Suffolk County Human Rights Commission, chairing its Education Committee.
As a Commissioner and Chair of the Committee on Education for the Suffolk County Human Rights Commission, Professor Mar was a co-organizer of “A Matter of Saving Lives: Adopting Evidence-Based Solutions to Gun Violence in Our Schools”. This event was co-organized by SALI (Science Advocacy of Long Island), NOW (National Organization of Women), SBU’s (CSISJP) Center for the Study of Inequality, Social Justice and Policy, SBU’s Medical School’s Center for Public Health and Health Policy Research, the Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science, and student activists from Student Action Days and LI March for Our Lives.
Professor Mar is also a guest editor for a special issue of the Journal of Chinese Philosophy dealing with “Building, Mending, and Breaching Walls: An Interdisciplinary Renewal of Chinese Philosophy” to which he is contributing an article entitled “Four Chinese Virtues, Four Prisons, and the Way On.”
Professor Mar has received the Outstanding Professor Award from the Alumni Committee, the President’s and Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching and the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in University Service.
In April 2019, Professor Mar will be chairing a panel at the Pacific Division APA in Vancouver, Canada for the Committee on Philosophy and Computers entitled “Philosophical Insights from Computational Philosophy”.
Professor Mar has been invited by the Executive Secretary of the Kurt Gödel Society, Professor Matthias Baaz of the Vienna Technical University, to be on the organizing committee for a conference “Kurt Gödel’s Legacy: Does the Future Lie in the Past?” to be introduced by the President of Vienna in July 2019.
A recent publication "Gödel's Ontological Dreams" by Mar was published in Space, Time and the Limits of Human Understanding (Springer, 2017) edited by Shyam Wuppuluri and Giancarlo Ghirardi, a highly interdisciplinary collection of essays by philosophers, physicists, mathematicians, logicians and computer scientists with an afterword by Noam Chomsky.
