We are pleased to announce that Stony Brook University has commenced a comprehensive
national search for its next president. As Chair of the Search Committee, I take seriously
this important task at this key moment in Stony Brook history.
The Search Committee represents the diversity of Stony Brook and was selected in accordance
with SUNY policy and guidelines. Members are committed to conducting a search that yields an accomplished, visionary
and inspirational president to lead Stony Brook University as it continues its forward
trajectory as one of the top public research universities in the United States.
The Search Committee is advisory to the SUNY Board of Trustees and consists of faculty,
staff, Stony Brook Foundation members, students, administration, alumni and Stony
Brook Council members who will conduct the search with a dedication to considering
the best overall interests of the institution rather than those of any one constituency.
We have retained the services of Spencer Stuart, an accomplished education recruitment
firm with deep experience at the highest levels of academia.
This website will keep you informed of the progress of the search and will contain
all relevant public information related to the search process.

The timeline for a presidential search — from its initiation and development of a
search committee to candidate review, interviews and final selection — takes several
months.
We have hired the firm of Spencer Stuart to aid in our search. Michele Haertel, the head of the firm’s Education & Social Impact practice, along with Nordia Edwards, Ponneh Varho and Michael Steck will partner with us on this search.
