The Office of Proposal Development (OPD) promotes the advancement of university initiatives by supporting the development and preparation of highly competitive grant proposals. OPD is committed to providing Stony Brook's research community with a comprehensive suite of services to foster the development and growth of research activities. In addition to proposal management, our support services include identifying extramural funding opportunities, coordinating limited submission competitions, nurturing research collaborations, and connecting researchers to institutional resources. We also organize workshops and trainings in grantsmanship, coordinate external copy editing and graphic design services, serve as project managers for the proposal development process, handle the administrative requirements and manage a repository of sample grant proposal materials. Our team’s forward-thinking approach to research development provides faculty with tactical support for large-scale proposals, ensuring that they are aligned with sponsor funding priorities.

Research News:

MRSEC Seed Grant Program Announcement
The Office of the Vice President for Research, the Office of the Provost, the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences, the College of Arts and Sciences, and the Renaissance School of Medicine are please to announce this seed grant program to fund collaborative efforts between researchers at Stony Brook University seeking to apply to NSF’s Materials Research Science and Engineering Centers (MRSEC) program. We anticipate the next MRSEC solicitation to be announced during the Fall 2024 semester. In preparation for this, Stony Brook University is launching a campus-wide seed grant program to begin forming competitive Interdisciplinary Research Groups (IRGs). 
Award: This seed grant program will award up to four (4) Interdisciplinary Research Groups, IRGs, each addressing a fundamental materials science topic. Awarded projects will receive between $40,000 and $75,000 (average award size $50,000) for a maximum award period of 12 months. 
Deadline: Full proposals due May 22, 2024 (deadline extended) via the MRSEC Seed Grant Program Application Portal.

Addiction Research Seed Grant Program
The Office of the Vice President for Research, the Office of the Provost, and Stony Brook Health Sciences are please to announce this one-time program developed as a funding opportunity in conjunction with the SBU Addiction Research Symposium. The funds are to be utilized to bring addiction researchers together and provide a platform for launching collaborative addiction research projects in high priority topic areas.
What Does it Fund: Funds can be used for current research that explicitly addresses modern concerns in helping individuals and communities experiencing addiction or the effects of addiction. Basic research in addiction is also encouraged. PIs are expected to have clear external funding targets and must clearly demonstrate the necessity of the proposed research.
Applicant Requirements: To serve as Principal Investigator, an individual must have a current full-time Stony Brook University faculty appointment. Please review the eligibility criteria carefully to determine whether you need a letter from your Department Chair. 
Award: This seed grant program will award up to five (5) projects between $25,000-$75,000 with project lengths between 12-18 months. The funds will be partially disbursed at the award start date, with the remaining funds disbursed after the awardee has submitted their first external submission. Proposals should provide a clear timeline to the submission of a proposal to an external sponsor within 18 months. 
Deadline: Full proposals due June 20, 2024 (deadline extended). The submission portal will be available soon.

2023-24 SUNY Research Seed Grant Program 
SUNY has announced the RFP for the NIH Resubmission and NSF Revised Submission Support Awards under the 2023-24 SUNY Research Seed Grant Program.
SUNY Deadlines: June 30, 2024
How to Submit: To apply to this program, PIs must follow the internal submission process detailed below. Please note that myResearch is not required for this submission. PIs must complete the full application in the Foundant online grant management system five (5) days in advance of the targeted SUNY deadline, to allow time for review and to obtain signatures from the VPR and Provost. Applications must be completed in the portal by June 24, 2024. If an application is not received before the five (5) day deadline, the PI will be in jeopardy of not being able to submit. PIs must provide their OSP Pre-Award Specialist with the 'Can Submit' permission through the 'Collaborate' function in the submission portal. 
Please note: PIs must notify their OSP Pre-Award Specialist of their intent to submit and we encourage early submission of the cover page to ensure enough time for routing and to obtain signatures.

Summer 2024 OVPR Revise and Resubmit Seed Grant Program
The Office of the Vice President for Research is pleased to announce the OVPR Revise and Resubmit Seed Grant Program, which is
now accepting applications on a quarterly basis.
What Does it Fund: The program will support the resubmission efforts of PIs/teams who have received highly favorable summary statements on prior, unfunded grant proposals submitted to external sponsors. The funds are to be utilized to explicitly address concerns and gaps in the original submissions as indicated by the reviewers. The OVPR Revise and Resubmit Seed Grant program will accept proposals from PIs targeting external funding opportunities from any sponsor for their resubmissions. 
Applicant Requirements: To serve as Principal Investigator, an individual must have a current full-time faculty appointment at Stony Brook University. Please review the eligibility criteria carefully to determine whether you need a letter from your Department Chair. 
Award: The average award size of $10,000. Well-justified proposals may request up to $15,000. Award periods will vary but will be no longer than 12 months.
Deadline: Proposals are accepted on a quarterly basis, beginning with a deadline of Monday, July 1, 2024, via the Revise and Resubmit Seed Grant Program Application Portal.
