Chemistry Building: Important Updates

Dear Seawolves, 

Thank you for your continued patience and understanding as we address the damage caused by the heavy rain earlier this week.

We would like to provide some important updates, regarding the Chemistry Building: 

  • The building will be open for the start of all classes on Monday; we have taken multiple steps to limit disruptions and support your learning environment.

  • In particular, all laboratory classes including CHE 133, 154, 303, 327, 357, and 384 as well as ENV 321 are also being held normally. However, be advised that the elevators within the Chemistry Building are temporarily out of service due to flooding damage.

      • If you have a class or lab on the second or third floor of the building and are unable to use the stairs, beginning September 3rd, you may use the elevator in Frey Hall and then cross the footbridge to reach the 3rd floor of the Chemistry Building. 

      • If your course is normally held on the 2nd floor (CHE 133 or CHE 154) and you have mobility concerns, you have the option to complete your lab check-in and subsequent course experiments in a 3rd floor organic lab, accessed through the footbridge between Frey Hall and Chemistry, at mutually convenient times per individual arrangement with the course instructor. 

      • During the first week of classes, before the footbridge is available, please contact the instructor of your course if you have mobility concerns and need to make alternate arrangements to complete any necessary coursework. 

If these options are still not feasible and / or you need accommodations due to mobility concerns, please contact the Student Accessibility Support Center (SASC) at sasc@stonybrook.edu or 631-632-6748. SASC is fully aware of the situation and ready to assist you in obtaining the necessary accommodations and support to create an inclusive learning environment.

Thank you again for your patience. Your success in your classes is our top priority at Stony Brook, and we are doing all we can to work through challenges caused by the recent flooding event and minimize the impact to your academic pursuits. The Department will keep you informed if there are any changes. In the meantime, please review the Brightspace sites for the above courses for relevant announcements and information from the individual course / section instructors.
