March 30, 2020: $500K to Seed COVID-19 Research at Stony Brook

A special COVID-19 Seed Grant Program has been announced by the Office of the Vice President for Research, in partnership with the Institute for Engineering-Driven Medicine at Stony Brook University. This program will infuse up to one half-million dollars to support Stony Brook researchers and clinicians who are responding rapidly and creatively to the critical needs arising from the COVID-19 pandemic. These issues are broad, including the urgent healthcare challenges posed by the pandemic as well as the related psychosocial, behavioral and economic impacts.

“We’re seeing an unprecedented need for researchers across the country to provide innovative solutions to combat COVID-19,” said Richard J. Reeder, Vice President for Research. “We want to do everything possible to support our outstanding researchers to jump start research that will serve the urgent healthcare needs of our community.”

Stony Brook researchers have already demonstrated impressive ingenuity with iCREATE printing 3D face masks and the Department of Chemistry producing gallons of hand sanitizers.  There are more engineering solutions to be explored to address this enormous health challenge.

Now more than ever, the intersection of medical research, computing and engineering has the ability to impact the greater good,” said Dr. Joel Saltz, Cherith Foundation Chair of Biomedical Informatics and Director of the Institute for Engineering-Driven Medicine. “This COVID-19 Seed Grant Program will unite our diverse research communities to develop engineering-driven medical solutions that could change the trajectory of COVID-19 response.”

The application process for this special COVID-19 seed grant program is designed to be straightforward with a quick turnaround. The deadline is April 10, 2020. All details can be found here

The Office of Proposal Development is available to provide support to researchers submitting COVID-19 funding applications. A list of internal and external COVID-19 funding opportunities can be found here.
