Use Caution While Traveling on Campus

November 22, 2024

Dear Students, Faculty, and Staff:

There has been a noticeable increase in motor vehicle accidents in recent weeks, including SIX on campus yesterday. Out of an abundance of caution, we urge all students, faculty and staff to be extra vigilant and adhere to the following safety reminders.

DRIVERS

  • Obey the speed limit.
  • Come to a complete stop at red lights and stop signs, and follow the appropriate rules of the road.
  • Do NOT use your mobile device or other distractible items while driving.
  • If making a right turn on red, please check to see if it is safe first.
  • Check blind spots before making turns.
  • Slow down when approaching crosswalks. Remember, always yield the right of way to a pedestrian as they cross the road.

    PEDESTRIANS/CYCLISTS
  • Utilize crosswalks where available.
  • Wear bright/reflective clothing at night.
  • Be alert! Limit the use of mobile devices while walking and pay attention to your surroundings—especially when crossing roads or near the roadway.
  • Practice bicycle and e-scooter safety by using prescribed lanes and yielding to pedestrians as appropriate.

PEDESTRIAN SAFETY/DISTRACTED DRIVING PROGRAM
Our University Police Department (UPD) Community Relations Team (CRT) offers an on-demand Pedestrian Safety/Distracted Driving Program. Book a class online through the UPD website

REFLECTIVE VEST GIVEAWAY
Friday, November 22, 2024 12PM to 1PM: CRT will be in the Union Lobby distributing reflective vests while supplies last.

Our safety app, SB Guardian, allows for one-touch dialing to UPD and safety timers. Within SB Guardian, users can set a specified arrival time and alert your emergency contact upon safe arrival.

To report an accident, contact University Police at 333 (from an on-campus landline) or 631-632-3333 from a mobile device.

Thank you for your part in keeping our campus safe,
