About the Campus Safety Advisory Committee
Stony Brook University is comprised of a remarkable community of students, faculty, staff, and visitors who spend varying amounts of time here. For many our campus is their “home away from home.” Campus safety is a top priority and we will continue to work hard in order to make Stony Brook a safe community for all.
In accordance with New York State’s Consolidated Education Laws and SUNY Policy 5401, the 2023-24 Campus Safety Advisory Committee will review current campus security policies and procedures and make recommendations for their improvement. The Committee shall specifically review current policies, plans and procedures for:
- educating the campus community, including security personnel and those persons who advise or supervise students, about sexual assault, domestic violence, stalking offenses, as well as bias related and hate crimes;
- educating the campus community about personal safety and crime prevention;
- educating students and prospective students about hate crime reporting and statistics as part of our onboarding process;
- reporting sexual assaults, domestic violence, stalking incidents, hate crimes and assisting victims during investigations;
- referring complaints to appropriate authorities;
- counseling victims; and
- responding to inquiries from concerned persons.
The Committee will also take a look at physical and electronic access control and public assembly policies, as well as fire safety and prevention. The Committee will report their findings and recommendations to the President by the end of June.
