Sustainability
The graduate program in Sustainability allows students to develop skills that can help governments, communities, non-profit organizations, and corporations reduce their environmental impacts and build resilience.
Our faculty and graduate students come from diverse intellectual backgrounds and study some of the most pressing societal challenges from a variety of perspectives.
Faculty members in the Division of Sustainability have active research projects funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) the Lincoln Institute of Land Policy, and other sources.
Our current faculty members study topics including urban planning, disaster recovery, public policy, geospatial analysis, biology, chemistry, environmental humanities, environmental health and toxicology, environmental history, and related areas.
The M.S. and Ph.D. programs in Sustainability follow SoMAS’s unified flexiblecurriculum in Marine, Atmospheric, and Sustainability Sciences. A typical course of study for an M.S. student in sustainability provides rigorous training in areas appropriate to a students’ research interests that include research methods as well as substantive knowledge in topics pertinent to a students’ research and career goals.
The Sustainability program prepares students with strong communication, analysis and problem-solving skills suitable for positions in research, education, journalism, advocacy, and environmental management, among many others.
Sustainability Ph.D. students build on these foundations, becoming independent scholars studying some of the most critical challenges confronting society at the intersection of human and natural systems. Students develop a tailored research program that suits the questions they seek to answer, which can be studied from both quantitative and/or qualitative perspectives.
