My research broadly focuses on how aquatic organisms interact with toxic chemicals in their environment.   I am interested in how organisms accumulate and metabolize organic contaminants, and how they respond to such exposure at the cellular, behavioral, biochemical, and physiological levels. Much of my work in done in collaboration with other labs at SoMAS and elsewhere, and due to their heightened sensitivity, most of my recent work focusses has focused on effects observed in early life stages of different fish species.  One of my current projects is evaluating the effects of neuroactive pharmaceuticals on fishes which nesting within larger projects evaluating the effectiveness of advanced treatment to remove pharmaceutical from the waste stream, and other evaluating discharges of pharmaceuticals into the Hudson River. A second project is broadly evaluating biological, environmental and anthropogenic factors that influence survival and growth of young-of-the-year winter flounder in Long Island bays.  A third project evaluating bioaccumulation and potential effects of persistent organic contaminants and methyl mercury in elasmobranch species is just getting underway. Recently completed projects examined the toxicity of oil spill dispersants, their component chemicals and dispersed oil to fish embryos and larvae, and the confounding effects of co-exposure to hypoxia, and another examining the impacts of exposure to blooms of the toxic Cyanobacteria Microcystis on early life stage fishes.
