Since it first opened in 1970, the Stony Brook Union has been a building block in
the long standing traditions at our university. The newly renovated facility provides
a holistic approach to addressing students’ needs, as a home to centralized services,
programs and initiatives to provide a more efficient and holistic campus experience.
Building Highlights:
- 63.4 million dollar, 3 year renovation, completed in 2020
- 177,000 square foot facility, situated at the center for the Stony Brook campus
- The building’s exterior combines modernist and neoclassic touches to create a timeless
style. Finishes include a mix of brick, stone, metal panels and glass assemblies
- The interior features open spaces, high ceilings and a grand staircase to the second
floor
- 3 levels dedicated to student services and student-centric spaces
- A main lobby that supports studying and collaborative learning through comfortable
seating, powered stations, and at DoIT help desk
- 4,000 square foot ballroom to support campus events, student programs and activities,
and external reservations
- 3,500 square feet of tutoring space, that includes private and collaborative spaces
- 100 seat auditorium featuring a fixed podium for the presenter and plush audience
seats, each with their own convenient outlet and tablet arm
- Each level features either meeting rooms, conference rooms or classrooms to serve
the campus community
- A central location for student-facing offices and departments to provide easy access
and convenience
- An enhanced Stony Brook Food Pantry, available to students, faculty and staff
- Student Accessibility Support Center and Testing Rooms
- Club Hub, a 6,500 square foot gathering space includes video games and a space for
crafting events
Student Life Highlights:
- Newly designated and centralized Office of Student Life combining Student Engagement
& Activities; Student Community Development; Fraternity and Sorority Life; Diversity,
Intercultural & Community Engagement; and Campus Life Centers
- Expanded footprint for nationally recognized Center for Civic Justice
- Club Hub, a 6,500 square foot lounge featuring recreational video game stations and
consoles, and traditional games such as billiards and air hockey in addition to a
large crafting space, comfortable seating, and club storage space
- Dedicated Fraternity & Sorority Lounge located within Club Hub allows for chapter
meetings, recruitment events and community programs for our Greek lettered organizations
- Athletic Band Storage, lounge and student performance group rehearsal space
- The new Interfaith Center includes the Mark & Gloria Snyder Hillel Center for Jewish
Life, the Interfaith Chapel, Catholic Campus Ministries, Protestant Campus Ministries,
Islamic Ministries and a new Islamic Prayer Room
