- Chapter Awards
To be eligible for these awards, a chapter must meet minimum recognition standards for the recent academic year. Note: Organizational Status may impact eligibility for awards.
Excellence in Academic Achievement
This award recognizes the chapter with the highest overall GPA for the Fall Term.
Excellence in Managing Risk
This award recognizes one chapter that educates its members about risk management and harm reduction practices by providing proactive educational opportunities. In addition, the chapter executive board officers lead by example in application of the chapter's risk management policies and place an emphasis on internal accountability.
Excellence in Philanthropy/Service
This award recognizes one chapter for its service related and/or philanthropic endeavors. For a chapter to be considered excellent, it needs to provide members with opportunities to learn about the importance of civic engagement and contributing to the development of the community. Service efforts must also educate members through their action and their philanthropic efforts to positively promote the welfare of others. Additionally, this award recognizes a chapter's outstanding efforts in the area of charitable fundraising and donations. Please include your overall charitable fundraising total for the academic year. These funds must have been donated.
Outstanding Chapter Management
This award is presented to the chapter whose Executive Board goes above and beyond the expected duties and works together to substantially improve the quality of their chapter. The award recognizes a chapter that has excelled in balancing the many facets that go into a fraternal organization. This chapter exemplifies the highest standards of management with communication and delegation.
Most Improved Chapter
This award is given to the chapter that has made significant improvements in at least one of the following categories: Academic Excellence, Leadership Development, Chapter Management, and Inter-fraternal Relations. In addition, the winning chapter has positively contributed to both fraternity and sorority life as well as the Stony Brook community.
Chapter of the Year
This award recognizes a chapter on excellence in all of the following areas: Academic Excellence, Member Education, Leadership Development, Chapter Management, and Inter-Fraternal Relations. In addition, this chapter has positively contributed to both fraternity and sorority life as well as the Stony Brook community. This chapter served as role models for their fellow members and lead by example. [Chapter must achieve 5 Star including a cumulative 3.0 chapter GPA requirement] - Program Awards
These awards honor the chapters who have excelled in creating successful, unique programming in the various aspects of Fraternity and Sorority Life.
Innovative Program in Professional Development Award
This award recognizes one creative program held by a fraternity or sorority that promotes professional development for all of its members. As a result of this program, students are better prepared for their careers and life after Stony Brook. Please provide specific examples as to the impact of the program.Innovative Program for Helping Others (Service or Philanthropy)
This award recognizes one community service or philanthropic event held by a fraternity or sorority that promotes civic engagement and encourages selfless acts of service. Cannot be an annual program. Please provide specific examples as to the impact of the program.Innovative Program for Diversity & Multicultural Awareness
This award recognizes one creative program held by a fraternity or sorority that promotes diversity and multicultural awareness for all of its members and attendees. Please provide specific examples as to the impact of the program.Innovative Program for Risk Management Education
This award recognizes one risk management related program held by a fraternity or sorority that promotes education and awareness about keeping themselves and others safe. As a result of this program, students learn about social responsibility, alcohol and substance abuse awareness, hazing awareness, and other risk prevention related topics. Please provide specific examples as to the impact of the program.Innovative Program for Health & Wellness
This award recognizes one creative program held by a fraternity or sorority that promotes overall positive wellness for all of its members. As a result of this program, students are more aware of their personal wellbeing and are ready to take an active role to enhance it. Some topics that can be covered include mindfulness, self-care, and other areas of holistic wellness. Please provide specific examples as to the impact of the program.Program of the Year
This award recognizes one program hosted by a recognized organization that was the most impactful, to both its membership and the fraternity and sorority community at large. This award is geared towards programs in the following areas: social, educational, cultural/diversity, wellness, and scholarship. Please provide specific examples as to the impact of the program. - Individual Awards
Nominations for individual awards can be made by fellow members of the fraternity and sorority community or through student self-nominations. Nominations are reviewed by the awards committee. All award recipients must meet the minimum of a 2.5 Cumulative GPA unless specific otherwise.
Outstanding Scholarship Award
This award is presented to one member who excels academically and serves as a role model for their organization through their academic involvement while maintaining at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA.Tasheka S. Sutton Spirit Award
This award is presented to one student who is passionate about positively representing fraternity and sorority life. They use their passion to exemplify their chapter's values and principles as described in their ritual while educating the campus about the fraternity and sorority community as an active advocate to the community. This student leader actively embodies the mission and values of the fraternal movement. Due to the prestige and honor of this award, a recipient can only receive this achievement once during their academic career. The nominee must obtain at least a 3.0 GPAHyperion Awards
The Greek word Hyperion means "Titan of Light." The Hyperion Award is a way to honor these "Titans of Light." The award is presented annually to members who have made a significant impact upon the fraternity and sorority community during their collegiate career through exhibiting excellence within their chapters and contributing to the Stony Brook community. This award is an excellent opportunity to recognize the students who may not otherwise receive acknowledgment for their accomplishments and their efforts to incorporate positive change in their organization or council, the fraternity and sorority life community, and/or the campus at large. To be eligible for this award, nominees must be graduating in this academic year, and must obtain at least a 2.5 GPAAdvisor of the Year
This award is given to the advisor that goes above and beyond in supporting their chapter and Fraternity & Sorority life as a whole. This award can be given to either a faculty/staff advisor or a graduate/alumni advisor to be eligible for this award, nominee must have served some or all of their advisory term during the current academic year.Friend of Fraternity and Sorority Life
This award is given to a faculty or staff member who goes above and beyond in supporting Fraternity & Sorority life as a whole. This award recognizes a campus professional for working with fraternity and sorority life to help members reach their full potential.Emerging Leader Award
This award recognizes newer members who have already made significant contributions to the fraternity and sorority community and the Stony Brook University community and have demonstrated the potential for leadership and continuing service.Outstanding Council Leader Award
This award honors an individual who serves on a council executive board who has gone above and beyond their role as an Executive Council Member. As a result of their actions, they have improved their council and the larger fraternity/ sorority community.Executive Board Member of the Year
This award is presented to one executive board member, that has gone above and beyond in their role in terms of superior leadership and service to their chapter, as well as to the fraternity and sorority community. This leader is one who consistently represents their organizational values, communicates a clear vision for success, and leaves their organization in a better place than when they took office.
[To be eligible for this award, nominee must have served some or all of their term in office during the current academic year.]Fraternity & Sorority Leader of the Year
This award is given to one fraternity leader and one sorority leader, who are more than just the letters of their organization. The recipients have consistently demonstrated leadership to the fraternity and sorority community and the Stony Brook University community. The impact on fraternity and sorority life at Stony Brook University will still be felt well after their departure from the institution.
