Undergraduate College Fellows Program
The Undergraduate Colleges provide an opportunity for motivated emerging leaders to
become Undergraduate College Fellows and serve as peer mentors in their second year.
Upon acceptance into the program, prospective Fellows enroll in the Undergraduate
College Fellows Seminar during the spring semester of their first year. Following
completion of the seminar, students are fully recognized as Undergraduate College
Fellows and participate in welcoming the next class of first-year students at New
Student Welcome Week and in the First-Year Seminars. Fellows serve as Teaching Assistants
for the First-Year Seminar, SBU 101, and are required to register for a Fall Teaching
Practicum.

Being a fellow meant so much to me--not only did it teach me so much about Stony Brook
and about my own strengths and weaknesses, but working with my instructor and helping
run SBU 101 also gave me a lot of confidence in myself, confidence which has stuck
with and helped me ever since. And, of course, it's a great opportunity to help your
fellow students, and to help make campus a better place. |

As I wrap up my time as an undergraduate student here at Stony Brook I often reflect
on the fellow's program. I came to campus very scared and nervous about making friends,
personal life, schoolwork, and how my professors would perceive me. When I had taken
the SBU 101 class it was my stress relief of the week. My fellow at the time Rebecca
had inspired me to become a fellow, she was exceedingly kind to the class, and it
looked like something that I would love to do. When I officially became a fellow,
I found myself being so much happier in my undergraduate life. I was able to help
the first-year students and transfers get adjusted to this beautiful campus and the
busy college life. My instructor taught me and the students more about inclusivity,
intersectionality and overall, how to become a better person. They are also why I
am now curious about teaching as she was an amazing advisor, mentor, and instructor
to the class and me! I am so happy to be a forever fellow. |

Being a fellow has been one of the most rewarding experiences in my life. As an International
student, I always assumed I would have a hard time connecting with people because
of the cultural/accent differences. However, after being a fellow, meeting so many
people, this perspective has completely shifted. The whole experience made me step
out of my comfort zone and has taught me a lot of leadership skills. Surprisingly,
the skills you learn while being a fellow literally stick with you forever, the number
of times they have helped me help someone/myself are countless. On top of all that,
you get to meet such great people and become part of this family, the saying goes,
once a fellow, forever a fellow! The advisors along with the colleges really mean
that! There is something beautiful about being with like-minded people and sharing
experiences. I hold pride in being a fellow and have been one for 3 semesters in a
row now. Good luck, you're in the right place! |

My experience as a fellow for the undergraduate colleges at Stony Brook helped to
give me insight into my future career as a teacher. I was able to gain classroom management
skills, and learn how to engage students in a lesson. |

I can honestly say that getting involved with, and becoming an Undergraduate College
Fellow has shaped me into the student, individual, person, and leader that I am today.
Furthermore, I can confidently say to all of you, that becoming a Fellow will equally
be one of the best decisions that you make throughout your time here! |

My 101 instructor David Iboy and my Fellow, Jules came to me with the suggestion of
applying to become a fellow. Fast forward to the end of the semester and I got selected.
“They must have made a mistake somewhere… me? Come on.” Despite this bit of doubt
I went with it, and it turned out to be, all clichés aside, one of the most amazing
things that ever happened to me. Being a Fellow doesn't so much change you as it does
magnify a part of your character that was always there but not visible. Even in my
SBU 275 class, I was unsure of myself and what I was doing or even if I deserved this
position, but we all get picked for a reason. For me, I discovered this in the fall
as I TA’d for my 101 class. |
