Fire Prevention

Fire Prevention at Stony Brook University is a year-round effort by the EH&S Fire Marshals.  During the months of September and October, Fire Marshals conduct numerous fire safety lectures, fire extinguisher training and live-burn demonstrations in each of the Campus Residence Quads and host an Annual Fire & Safety Expo on the SAC Plaza, to coincide with National Fire Safety campaigns - Campus Fire Safety Month and Fire Prevention Week.

Here are a few things that you can do to practice fire prevention.

In an Emergency

  • Report fire or smoke conditions
    • When on campus call University Police
      • Dial 333 from any campus phone or 631-632-3333 from a cellular phone.
    • When at home or off campus
      • Dial 911
  • Evacuate the building promptly
  • Notify others (pull the fire alarm on your way out).

Fire Prevention at Work

  • Electrical Safety- Extension cords are prohibited.  Surge protectors certified by Underwriters Laboratories is an acceptable substitute for extension cords. Never plug surge protectors into each other.
  • Building Familiarization- Identify locations of nearest exits, portable fire extinguishers and fire alarm pull stations.
  • Storage- Accumulation of combustible/flammable materials. Maintain minimum storage within office and lab areas.

Fire Prevention at Home – In a fire, Every Second Counts: Plan 2 Ways Out!

  • Smoke Detectors- Should be installed in or near ever bedroom or sleeping area.
  • Carbon Monoxide detectors- CO alarms should be installed in a central location outside each sleeping area and on every level of the home, and in other locations where required by applicable laws, codes or standards.
  • Edith- Practice emergency escape drills in the home frequently. Consider emergency escape ladders for egress for multiple story egress.

Remember when you change the clocks, change the batteries in smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. The University Fire Marshals currently has a limited supply of 9v batteries available for Faculty and Staff. Please contact our office at 2-9678 if you would like a battery.
