Welcome to the New Laboratory Registration System!
As required by University Laboratory Safety policy, Principal Investigators are required to register their laboratories with the Department of Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S). With the help of the University Laboratory Safety Council and individual PI’s, EH&S implemented a new database called EH&S Assistant. This new database includes a Laboratory Registration System that will allow EH&S and Principal Investigators to benefit jointly in many ways, including:
- Help PI's conduct a Hazard Assessment of potential hazards specific to their laboratory space, including biological, chemical, radiological, and other hazards.
- Provide recommendations for administrative and engineering controls, as well as personal protective equipment (PPE), and to eliminate or minimize potential exposures.
- Identify training requirements based on hazards identified during the registration.
- Provide training history for all laboratory personnel.
- Facilitate the reporting of chemical and biological inventory information required by federal regulations, including the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Chemical Facility Anti-Terrorism Standards (CFATS) and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) Biological Select Agents and Toxins (BSAT) requirements. (Note: Radiological inventories managed by the EH&S Radiation Protection Services (RPS) group are also available on the system.)
- Document, review and track inspections to ensure timely corrective actions and compliance.
- Provide emergency responders with critical information about laboratory hazards and operations.
EH&S are also working to add new features to this system as we progress throughout the year.

A few things about the Laboratory Registration System:
The registration is based on a Principal Investigator, and includes their personnel, rooms and hazardous materials within a single building. If a PI has rooms in multiple buildings, we ask them to complete a single registration per building.
What you will need to complete this registration:
Prior to logging in and registering your laboratories, you should have the following information at hand to make registration as quick as possible:
- Names and SBU ID #s for all laboratory personnel
- Room numbers for all labs and lab spaces that you use
- Knowledge of the types of hazards and hazardous materials (biological, chemical, radioactive, physical) within the lab.
- An updated chemical inventory for all DHS listed chemicals
- An updated inventory of all Select Agents, Toxins, and any other biological materials that you work with
Delegating this task to your lab manager/supervisor:
If you are going to assign the registration to someone in your lab, you need to contactEHSLRS@stonybrook.edu and let us know the name of that person first so that we can grant them access to register for you. You will be notified when they are cleared to register your spaces.
What spaces need to be registered?
All Laboratories, as defined in the Registration of Laboratories policy, need to be registered. This can include any spaces where hazardous materials are stored and/or used, including art studios.
The following laboratory spaces don’t need to be registered:
- Computer Labs
- Mechanical Rooms
- Shops used to support operations
