About Brookhaven National Laboratory

Stony Brook helps manage nearby Brookhaven National Laboratory – a premier research organization and the only U.S. Department of Energy-funded national lab in the Northeast. Each year, more than 600 of our faculty and students use Brookhaven's world-class facilities – including the only operating U.S. particle collider, an x-ray light source, and a nanoscience research center – to answer the most exciting, important questions in science—from the birth of our universe to the sustainable energy technologies of tomorrow.

Brookhaven advances fundamental research in nuclear and particle physics to gain a deeper understanding of matter, energy, space, and time; applies photon sciences and nanomaterials research to energy challenges of critical importance to the nation; and performs cross-disciplinary research on climate change, sustainable energy, and Earth’s ecosystems. Seven Nobel Prizes have been awarded for work at Brookhaven.
