Faculty Research Advisors

The faculty rosters for 12 PhD programs most relevant to research for biology students are listed below:

Anatomical Sciences

The Department of Anatomical Sciences at Stony Brook University consists of award-winning faculty who are internationally recognized researchers in organismal biology and are dedicated educators who foster a long-standing culture of teaching excellence. As evolutionary morphologists and paleobiologists, we use anatomical data to elucidate the biology and relationships of living and extinct species. Our research and teaching is unified by the evolutionary perspective that the vertebrate body, including our own, is shaped by natural selection

Biochemistry and Structural Biology

Research in the fields of biochemistry and structural biology provides the foundation for understanding life on the molecular level. The Program in Biochemistry and Structural Biology (BSB) provides graduate students with the training and tools to determine the structure and address the function and mechanism of proteins, DNA, RNA, membrane lipids and the hundreds of other molecules in cells. A major focus is on how interactions between these molecules regulate cell function.

Biomedical Engineering

Faculty at Stony Brook University have been active contributors to the cutting edge of this technology and our University is building on internationally acclaimed strengths in Bioelectromagnetics, Biomechanics, Biomaterials, Biotechnology, Computational Modeling, Instrumentation and Medical Imaging.

Ecology and Evolution

The department and graduate program has an international reputation in the fields of evolutionary biology and ecology. Particular areas of strength in our program include population genetics, conservation ecology, molecular evolution and phylogenetics, ecosystem ecology, evolutionary genomics, species interactions, invasion ecology, marine and freshwater ecology, and primate evolution and behavior.

Genetics

The Graduate Program in Genetics was founded in 1980 as an inter-institutional program, combining the strengths in genetics at Stony Brook University, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, and Brookhaven National Laboratory.  With nearly 100 faculty, the Genetics Program encompasses expertise that ranges from fundamental studies on classical animal, plant, and microbial model systems to cutting-edge research on behavior, cancer, and other human diseases.  Students enjoy superb opportunities for training that reflect the ever-expanding role of genetics in modern biological and biomedical research.

Marine Sciences

The SoMAS faculty are internationally known for their leadership in research in the atmospheric sciences, all the major disciplines of oceanography – biological, chemical, geological, and physical, as well as sustainability studies. The expertise of SoMAS faculty places them in the forefront in addressing and answering questions about immediate regional problems, as well as long-term problems relating to the global oceans and atmosphere. The primary focus of the SoMAS faculty and students is on fundamental research designed to increase understanding of the processes that characterize the coastal ocean and the atmosphere. But the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences is also committed to a sustainable future by applying research to solve problems that result from society’s uses and misuses of the environment.

Microbiology and Immunology

The deparment's students carry out their research with program faculty whose labs are actively involved in applying state-of-the-art basic research methods in molecular genetics, cell biology, and biochemistry to medically important problems in areas including cancer, infectious diseases, signal transduction, and cell cycle regulation.

Molecular and Cellular Biology

Our students select their thesis advisors from over 100 faculty members in several departments: Biochemistry and Cell Biology, Pathology, Molecular Genetics and Microbiology, Pharmacology, Chemistry, Physiology, and Medicine. The MCB graduate program also enjoys close scientific links with the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, and Brookhaven National Laboratory. The MCB program serves as an umbrella program that builds close ties among all contributing departments, with the intent of promoting a collaborative environment that encourages interdisciplinary research.

Molecular and Cellular Pharmacology

The Molecular and Cellular Pharmacology (MCP) Graduate Program at Stony Brook University brings together gifted students, scientists and physicians striving to explore the biochemical and molecular biological mechanisms that regulate cell and organ function, and the design and development of effective pharmacological means to intervene in them when they are errant.

Neuroscience

The Department of Neurobiology currently has 23 faculty with substantial research strengths in neural development, circuit function, computation, cellular communication through receptors, channels and synapses and neurological and psychiatric diseases.

Oral Biology and Pathology

Oral Biology and Pathology is part of the School of Dental Medicine within the Health Sciences Center. The mission of the Graduate Program in Oral Biology and Pathology is to foster academic and creative research excellence in the field of Biomedical Science. Our Programs provide advanced training in the understanding of human oral and systemic health and disease which will provide the basis for graduate students to become academic and research leaders in educational, industrial, and Research and Development arena's. Major areas of study include microbiology, biochemistry, immunology, developmental biology and genetics, functional morphology and biomechanics, neurobiology, bioengineering, biomaterials, stem cell biology, and dental public health.

Physiology and Biophysics

The Department's principal areas of research specialization are 1) Ion channel and gap junction Biophysics, with emphasis on cardiology and vision; 2) Intracellular and intercellular signaling mechanisms in cancer and neurobiology; 3). Physiology at the cellular, organ, and intact animal levels with emphasis on transgenic models of disease; 4) Fluorescence microscopy with the largest concentrations of microscopy equipment at Stony Brook University.
