Applied Math and Statistics

The Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics at Stony Brook University consists of approximately 30 faculty, 6 staff, over 300 graduate students, and nearly 800 undergraduate students, and offers a flexible and intellectually diverse undergraduate degree program, together with graduate degree programs with specialties in computational applied mathematics, computational biology, statistics, operations research, and quantitative finance. It also offers MS and PhD degrees in data science in collaboration with the Department of Computer Science.

Biomedical Engineering

The Department of Biomedical Engineering at Stony Brook University has 25 core faculty members who are internationally acclaimed in biomechanics, biomaterials, biotechnology, cell, molecular and tissue engineering, biosensors, biosystems modeling, bioinstrumentation, and medical imaging. Over 50 faculty from other departments are affiliated with the program, and as a result of active interdisciplinary collaborations, Stony Brook University is an outstanding resource for education and research in the health sciences.

Biomedical Informatics

The Department of Biomedical Informatics at Stony Brook University is housed in both the School of Medicine and the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences. Faculty expertise spans translational bioinformatics, clinical informatics, electronic health records, medical imaging informatics, and computational biology, fostering a dynamic learning environment for students pursuing degrees at the undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral levels. The Department of Computer Science at Stony Brook University has nearly 60 faculty members, including tenured, tenure-track and full-time teaching faculty. Several faculty have joint appointments with other departments or institutes. The faculty includes 25 NSF CAREER Awardees, 10 SUNY Empire Innovation Professors and 10 Fellows or Distinguished Members of various professional societies.

Electrical and Computer Engineering

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Stony Brook University has 30 full-time faculty members whose research interest cover very broad range of topics including machine learning and artificial intelligence, power electronics and power systems, quantum information science and technology, engineering driven medicine, circuits and VLSI, sensors and sensor systems as well as networks and distributed computing. The department offers a Bachelor of Engineering degree in electrical engineering and computer engineering, Master of Science degrees in electrical engineering, computer engineering, and engineering artificial intelligence, and doctoral degrees in electrical engineering and computer engineering.  There is also an opportunity for transfer students to study two years online and earn a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering in our unique ABET-accredited online program.

The Department of Materials Science and Chemical Engineering at Stony Brook University has a core faculty of 21 members who specialize in a diverse range of cutting-edge research areas, including Materials for Energy and the Environment, Nanotechnology, Catalysis, Advanced Materials, Microelectronics, the Hydrogen Economy, and Sustainability. These faculty members are at the forefront of developing innovative solutions to address global challenges in energy efficiency, environmental sustainability, and advanced technological applications. The department maintains a strong collaborative relationship with Brookhaven National Laboratory, enhancing its research capabilities and providing students and researchers with access to state-of-the-art facilities and expertise.

Mechanical Engineering

The Department of Mechanical Engineering at Stony Brook University has 19 full-time faculty active in cutting-edge, cross-disciplinary research, related to mechanical design and manufacturing, energy technology, robotics and machine learning, solid mechanics, fluid mechanics, and thermal sciences. Researchers receive funding from federal and state agencies such as the National Science Foundation, Department of Defense, Brookhaven National Laboratory, and from private industry. Students are encouraged to work directly with the faculty through technical electives, research, and hands-on design projects. The department offers a Bachelor of Engineering in mechanical engineering, as well as an accelerated BE/MS program, and graduate programs leading to the MS and PhD degrees in mechanical engineering.
