Chakia McClendon earned a Ph.D. in Energy and Environmental Systems from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University. Her graduate research was largely concentrated in pulmonary science that involved training in biology, toxicology and immunology. Using pigs as a translational model she was able to study agricultural related airway disease in humans, specifically COPD and asthma via proteomics techniques. She is currently a NYCAPS postdoctoral fellow within Dr. Todd Miller’s lab, where she studies the enzymatic activity, substrate specificity and physiological function of the non-receptor tyrosine kinases, Srms and Brk. Ultimately, we want to understand the signaling pathways involving these tyrosine kinases, which can lead to the design of new strategies for potential cancer treatments.

Why I chose to join IRACDA NY-CAPS:  The IRACDA NY-CAPS program gives me the opportunity to pursue faculty and research training at the same time, build my confidence within an academic setting and serve as a bridge to contribute to student success in science.
