IRACDA Scholar: Kamal Barley, Ph.D.
Kamal Barley
PhD: Applied Mathematics and Statistics, Arizona State University
NY-CAPS Placement: Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics
Current Position: Assistant Professor of Mathematics at Allen University
Originally from Saint Lucia, Dr. Kamal Barley received a BSc (Hons) in
Mathematical Science from Medgar Evers College (CUNY), Brooklyn, NY in 2004. He completed
an M.A in mathematics in 2008 followed by a Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics in 2016 from
the Arizona State University, focusing his research in dynamics, and control of emerging
vector-borne diseases. Dr. Barley's current research is on the trans-disciplinary
interface between biology, computational science, mathematics, and social sciences.
As a postdoctoral fellow under Dr. Thomas MacCarthy's guidance in Tom MacCarthy Research
Laboratory at Stony Brook University, Dr. Barley is currently researching computational
modeling approaches to study cellular
and molecular mechanisms of Germinal center B-cells. Being an IRACDA NYCAPS
scholar will ultimately give Dr. Barley the opportunity to gain interprofessional
teaching skills while broadening and strengthening the spectrum
of his research activities.
Why I chose to join IRACDA NY-CAPS: I believe the design of the IRACDA program will help hone in on my teaching skills
and provided a professional experience that will help me transition on my
career path to academia.
