In fall 2023, Samantha completed a PhD in Chemistry in the lab of Mariana Torrente at Brooklyn College. Here, her focus was understanding the effects of prion proteins to the histone post-translational modification panorama in the context of disease and non-disease models using the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. During this time she mastered a variety of techniques such as Western blotting, human cell culture, and immunostaining, and gained an interest in studying the underlying mechanisms behind neurodegenerative diseases, specifically amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
Why I chose to join Stony Brook IRACDA : I chose to join this program to improve myself as both an educator and as a scientist. Throughout both undergrad and graduate school, I’ve found that I have an intense passion for both teaching and conducting science, and I believe that the IRACDA program will give me the exact tools and support that I need to achieve my goals.
