Puerto Rico Hurricane Relief

From the Desk of Kenneth Kaushansky, MD,
Senior Vice President, Health Sciences, and Dean, Stony Brook University School of Medicine

Stony Brook Medicine is responding to the humanitarian crisis in Puerto Rico with plans to send physicians, nurses, staff and supplies to the storm-ravaged area. In the Stony Brook University School of Medicine, we are preparing to accommodate students from the Medical School in PuertoRico as well, and I encourage other Schools to consider the possibility of accepting your corresponding students in need into your Schools, as best as you can.

Response efforts are being coordinated through my office, and volunteers are being sought, as well as suggestions for additional ways that Stony Brook Medicine can assist. Supplies and food are also being contributed to hurricane relief efforts in Texas.

As Chair of the Greater New York Hospital Association (GNYHA) Board of Directors, I am also pleased to report that GNYHA has teamed with the Healthcare Association of New York State (HANYS) to establish New York Healthcare's Puerto Rico Hurricane Relief Fund to assist hospitals (including their healthcare workers) in Puerto Rico that were impacted by Hurricane Maria. The American Hospital Association has established a similar, national fund.

Thank you in advance for helping us ensure that much-needed financial and humanitarian support is provided to Puerto Rico in the wake of this devastating event. To volunteer or share your ideas for our institution’s response, please do not hesitate to contact my office or respond directly to this email

Cheers,

Ken
