Travel
Travel to Cuba requires the prior approval from Stony Brook University's Research Security Program. The U.S. government has not authorized unrestricted travel to Cuba. For example, the prohibition on travel for purely tourist purposes still remains in place. Travelers on official University business MUST meet the requirements of the specific authorizations described in the regulations (the requirements for a “general license”) or obtain U.S. government approval in the form of a license PRIOR to travel.

§515.564 amended the general license to include an authorizion, subject to conditions, for travel-related and other transactions incident to attending or organizing professional meetings or conferences in Cuba (previously removed in September 2020)
§515.565 amended the general license to add an authorization for group people-to-people educational travel that takes place under the auspices of an organization that is subject to U.S. jurisdiction and that sponsors such exchanges to promote people-to-people contact, subject to certain restrictions.
Reminder, as of September 2020 the general licenses authorizing persons subject to U.S. jurisdiction to participate in or organize certain public performances, clinics, workshops, other athletic or non-athletic competitons, and exhibitions was REMOVED. These activities require specific licenses.
