Controlled Government Information Overview


Classified Information 

Classified national security information is information created or received by an agency of the federal government or a government contractor that would damage national security if improperly released. The President of the U.S. manages the system of classifying information by executive order (E.O.); the most recent order concerning classified national security information is E.O. 13526, signed by President Obama on December 29, 2009.   Read more about Classified Information


Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI)

CUI is sensitive information that requires safeguarding or dissemination controls pursuant to and consistent with applicable law, regulations, and government-wide policies but is not classified under Executive Order 13526 or the Atomic Energy Act, as amended. 

Examples include (but are not limited to) health documents, proprietary material, export controlled information, or any other information that the government may mark as "for official use only" or "confidential".  Read more about Controlled Unclassified Information


Military Critical Technical Data Agreement (DD2345)

If you are required to obtain a DD2345 agreement (e.g. to attend a conference or meeting), please contact the Export Controls Program immediately for further assistance.  Normally this is an indicator that you will be receiving controlled information which must be managed accordingly.
