To provide an earlier on-ramp for student-faculty engagement, in 2021-2022, Stony Brook piloted a Faculty Fellowship program to bring the most dynamic faculty from across the University into high-impact scenarios with first-year students. Importantly, these courses were designed to increase educational equity, through fairness and inclusion, across Stony Brook's diverse undergraduate student body. Faculty Fellows designed high engagement pedagogical approaches across STEM, arts/humanities and social science disciplines.

Funded by an American Talent Initiative (ATI) Accelerator award, faculty fellows drew pedagogical “good practice” connections and built educational equity across different disciplines. With the support of the Center for Learning and Teaching Excellence (CELT), fellows assessed the impact of high engagement pedagogies on student persistence. 

As a partnership between Undergraduate Education and the Office of the Provost, the Stony Brook University Faculty Fellows program continues to provide professors at the university with the necessary resources to develop creative and innovative pedagogy. Fellows recieve one course buyout per semester over two academic years in order to dedicate working on their project. Teaming up with the Director of Faculty Engagement, fellows have a number of resources available to them during their tenure. These include:

An allotment amount of professional development funds are also available via formal request, should fellows wish to attend conferences to present thier research, or cover lab fees for students.

Fellows will also participate in a vibrant, diverse community of scholars on-campus. A component of this program includes outreach to colleagues to discuss teaching best practices - and to find ways to expand the pedagogies generated during the fellowship.
