Research in Hispanic Languages and Literature
Research in our department falls within the expanding field of humanities. It requires a diverse set of skills, including languages, history and critical theory, and uses different approaches and methodologies, depending on the specific area of study. Examples of research in the department cover a broad array of subjects: literature and film of Latin America and Spain, scholarly editions, Latino and Indigenous cultural production, the interconnections of environment and culture, the audio-visual narratives of social media, Spanish applied linguistics, just to name a few.

At the undergraduate level, most of our HUS and SPN courses include small research projects, but the SPN 400s are designed to engage students into semester-long inquiries leading to research projects, which can later grow into an honors thesis. The capstone of our undergraduate research is the honors thesis.
Our MA students take diverse seminars that combine academic research and practice, and write an MA thesis. Research for the MA thesis ranges from cultural studies and literary analysis to more applied research in topics related to Spanish applied linguistics and teaching.
Our PhD in HLL is an intensive research program. In varios seminars, students explore diverse fields of study and methodologies within the new humanities, develop original research and write a doctoral dissertation.
