Financial Support & Research Funding

In addition to the numerous and varied research opportunities available to IDPAS students, there are many sources of financial support, fellowships and prizes for which IDPAS students compete. The IDPAS supports most students on state teaching assistantships, based on lines allocated by the graduate school. The current annual TA base stipend in the academic year is $26,000 for the academic year (effective 10/2023). These awards (and others noted below) come with a tuition scholarship. Teaching responsibilities vary and include assisting in IDPAS, Anthropology, and Anatomical Sciences courses. Continued appointment as a teaching assistant requires satisfactory performance of the assigned TA duties. Research Assistantships within IDPAS faculty research programs may also be available with support comparable to a TA line. The F. James Rohlf Endowed Graduate Fellowship in Anthropology is annually awarded to one or more IDPAS PhD candidates, based on criteria of high academic achievement, strong progress towards program completion, and evidence of financial need.

The IDPAS provides each student with seed money in support of dissertation pilot research and travel money to support travel to academic meetings for students who are lead authors on meeting presentations. Seed and travel money allocations vary by year depending on program budget, but usually amount to ~$500.  In addition, the University offers awards such as Graduate Council Fellowships for outstanding new (incoming) students (held in the recent past by numerous IDPAS students), the W. Burghardt Turner Fellowship for eligible underrepresented students, the Herbert and Mildred Weisinger Fellowship for advanced graduates working on their dissertations, the Norman Creel Prize for Anatomical Research, and others.

IDPAS students have held National Science Foundation predoctoral fellowships, Graduate Council Fellowships, and W. Burkhardt Turner Fellowships. Our students have had success in obtaining National Science Foundation dissertation improvement awards, Leakey Foundation Research awards, Sigma Xi awards, and Wenner-Gren awards.
