Historical Note
This document records the transaction of a parcel of land to Josiah Miller from Matthew
Mulford, a prominent local figure. Described as "yeoman of divers good causes," Mulford
sold Miller a small plot—just one-eighth of an acre—for the sum of 6 pounds and 10
shillings. The land was neatly bounded by the highway to the north and east, with
Miller’s own property to the south and west, ensuring that Miller would have peaceful
and quiet enjoyment of the land.
The deed, dated in the 15th year of King George the Second's reign, and witnessed by Jeremiah Stratten and Elisabeth Stratten, bears the red wax seal of Matthew Mulford. This transaction provides a glimpse into the local landscape of early East Hampton, with Mulford possibly being Captain Matthew Mulford, who was a well-known figure buried at South End Cemetery in East Hampton. His lineage includes Judge John Mulford, an early settler, and Capt. Samuel Mulford, a notable member of the Provincial Assembly. This document not only highlights the practicalities of land transfer in the 18th century but also connects us to the influential families shaping the town’s development.
