Provost Search Update
February 8, 2022
To All Faculty and Staff,
I am writing to update you on our search for a new Provost and Executive Vice President
for Academic Affairs. Mónica Bugallo, Associate Dean for Diversity and Outreach and
Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering in the College of Engineering and
Applied Sciences, has agreed to serve as Interim Provost while we move forward with
our search. I am grateful for her leadership.
This is one of our most important leadership searches. We need an outstanding, forward-thinking
candidate who will guide Stony Brook's scholarship, research, and artistry while helping
to advance the educational mission and capitalize on the momentum that has developed
over the past several years. We need someone who will further our institutional reach
while managing the complex set of issues confronted by the Office of the Provost on
a regular basis.
A search committee has been appointed and our goal is to kick off the committee's
work in the next two weeks, moving the process forward quickly in an effort to bring
our new Provost to campus as soon as possible in the next academic year. The search
website is live and includes members of the committee as well as the full position description.
It will include other key information as it becomes available.
This search is an opportunity to build on the achievements of the Provost’s Office
over the past year, which include the Faculty Pathways program; collaboration on the
Research Acceleration, Tiger Teams initiatives; and assistance in launching the all-funds,
multi-year, strategic budgeting process.
I believe that Stony Brook University is well positioned to attract outstanding candidates
for this position. In late December, we were selected as a next round finalist to
be the anchor institution for the Governors Island Center for Climate Solutions. And
at the beginning of the year, Governor Kathy Hochul named Stony Brook University as
one of two flagship institutions in the SUNY system. This kind of ambition and excellence,
along with our central tenets of diversity, equity, and the promotion of socioeconomic
mobility, will be priorities as we launch our national search.
It certainly is an exciting time for Stony Brook University, and I want to thank you
for helping advance this institution as a powerhouse for research and medical innovation,
creativity, inclusivity, and knowledge. We look forward to collaborating with our
Seawolf community on this search.
Sincerely,
Maurie McInnis
President
