Rematriculation
To return to Stony Brook University, students must pursue rematriculation. Students
can review the relevant policies and instructions on how to proceed below.
- Undergraduate Students who have not been in attendance at Stony Brook University for more than two consecutive Fall/Spring terms, and would like to continue their degree would need to re-matriculate
- Students who have been suspended/dismissed would need to pursue Conditional Reinstatement prior to being re-matriculated
- If the student has graduated from SBU having earned their bachelor degree would not be eligible for re-matriculation, as they are not returning to complete the same degree
- A $50.00 non-refundable fee is associated with processing the Rematriculation Form
- The Rematriculation Form opens each semester for processing, and can be found on our Forms page
- Please check the Academic Calendar and Forms pages for dates of rematriculation
- Once students submit the form, it will be reviewed and processed by the Registrar’s Office
Upon processing students will need the following:
- Meet with their Academic Advisor to review their remaining requirements.
- Login to SOLAR and familiarize yourself with your accounts such as your NET ID
- Check your SOLAR account for any holds that might need to be addressed
- All international students will need to meet the Visa and Immigration Services Office to review requirements
- Students that do not attend the semester in which they rematriculate are not considered active for future semesters, and would need to pursue re-matriculation again for the new semester in which they plan on attending.
- NOTE: Summer and Winter terms are not considered to be semesters and credits earned during the summer do not count toward maintaining matriculation.
- Students are assigned a new requirement term when they rematriculate and are held responsible for the academic requirements in effect at the time of their return
- Students who indicate at the time of official withdrawal that they may wish to return to Stony Brook will be approved routinely for return to the University during the two semesters (Fall/Spring) following the one in which they withdrew if:
a. the student leaves in good academic standing;
b. there has been no previous withdrawal;
c. the student has no disciplinary action pending or in force.- If you are returning from an approved medical leave will need to meet with the Student Support Team before enrolling in future semesters.
- Students who have taken a Permanent Withdrawal: Students who wish to return to the university after requesting a Permanent Withdrawal must rematriculate.
- Students who withdraw from the University and whose cumulative grade point average is less than 2.00 are required to wait for at least one full term before they are permitted to re-enroll.
