Why The PhD & MD/PhD
What is a PhD?
A Doctorate of Philosophy, a mastery of a given subject area, the ability to produce
original research with distinction in a given field. In the context and goals of our
program, it is the critical stepping stone to having the validity to change scientific
culture and bring forth lasting and emblematic change for everyone within a scholar's
given field.
What is an MD/PhD?
An MD/PhD provides training as both a Clinician and a Scientist. Those holding this
title may conduct research on a field different from what they practice in as a clinician.
Only 3% of students moving into medical school undergo this training. Most MD/PhD
programs fully cover the cost of medical school.
Why is it our focus?
The National Science Foundation (NSF) 's annual survey of earned doctorates data reports
only 16.2% of doctorates are being earned by individuals from historically underrepresented
populations in STEM, a statistic non-reflective of population data in the US showing
a disparity in the pathway. This disparity is exacerbated further when looking at
disciplines such as mathematics, computer science, and physics that have less than
13% underrepresented populations completing doctorate degrees (NSF 2022 Data https://ncses.nsf.gov/pubs/nsf24300/data-tables).
The Stony Brook Simons STEM Scholars Program model tackles this problem at the undergraduate
level to equip students with the confidence and knowledge required to be successful
in their academic pursuits.
What Jobs are available?
Jobs for researchers exist in every field, whether it be through the government, private
sector, non-profit or university setting there is a constant need for PhD degree holders
in the sciences. But beyond research, PhD’s are also highly sought after as consultants,
scientific authors and patent developers. Additionally, the PhD launches you through
the ranks of an organization to begin as a leader early in your career.
How much does it cost?
Fellowships, grants and various funding mechanisms make it so the cost of tuition
for those pursuing a STEM related PhD is often zero. A common misconception is that
you need a masters degree prior to beginning a PhD. This is false, many PhD programs
will allow you to get your masters for free en route to the PhD
How long does it take?
On average, the PhD takes an additional 4-6 years to complete following the end of
your undergraduate education. This will often include an en route Masters degree (free
of charge) two years into the program. An MD/PhD takes 6-8 years to complete.
What does pay look like?
On Average PhDs in STEM make 10-20 thousand more than their counterparts who finish
at the Masters Degree, and nearly 30 thousand more than those who finish at the bachelor's
degree.
