Karen J. Smith, PhD

Dr. Smith is Lecturer of Higher Education Administration at Stony Brook University and Assistant Teaching Professor and Dissertation in Practice Chair at Northeastern University. Her Ph.D. in Higher Education from Florida State University centered on the study of organizations with competitive division of labor, and prior training in applied physiology at Auburn and Oregon State University provided an academic foundation to analyze organizations as organic systems. An interdisciplinary professional with over 25 years of higher education and industry experience, she has served as a vice president for academic affairs; associate vice president for institutional research, compliance and accreditation; as a senior research scientist and training analyst supporting domestic and international government, defense, and capacity building programs; and most recently as an international program officer facilitating student and faculty bilateral exchange with international partner institutions. She has conducted executive education and program evaluation in China, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Singapore, Botswana and Azerbaijan, and developed university bi-lateral exchange programs in Italy, France, and Germany. Dr. Smith teaches HEA 535 - International Higher Education.
