Transfer Credit Information

Transfer Credit Requirements
Transfer coursework is eligible for consideration if it has NOT been applied to a degree already earned.  All grades for any transfer coursework must be "B" or better. (B- or lower grades are ineligible for review.)  Pending approval from the program director, students are permitted to transfer credits that are applicable to the program as follows:

  • Master’s degree:  Maximum of 12 credits total.  This maximum can include a combination of up to 12 Stony Brook credits and/or 6 external credits.
  • Advanced Graduate Certificate:  Maximum of 6 credits total.  This maximum can include a combination of up to 6 Stony Brook credits and/or 3 external credits.

Students who are admitted or readmitted to an SPD degree or certificate program may petition SPD to have courses that are older than five years, and no older than 10 years, individually evaluated by the appropriate department/faculty to determine if the credits may be applied toward current SPD degree/certificate requirements.

Stony Brook Coursework
Current students who change programs and wish to have Stony Brook coursework considered for evaluation toward the Higher Education Administration program should complete the SPD Course Substitution Form (PDF).

External Coursework
Students who wish to have external (non-Stony Brook) coursework considered for evaluation toward the Higher Education Administration program should complete the Transfer Credit Information (PDF).  An official transcript and copy of the course description and syllabi are required.
