How can CAPS help?

College life can often be challenging and stressful.  At some point during their college experience, students may need some help dealing with feelings or problems that seem beyond their control.  They may feel anxious, depressed, unsure, or overwhelmed.

Counseling is a process that can help people identify more effective strategies to cope with difficult situations.  While some people who seek counseling have chronic emotional difficulties, most are dealing with normal life events and are simply in need of an objective listener - someone who doesn't judge and who can help them gain new skills and perspectives.

Concerns that we can typically assist you with at CAPS include:

  • Mild to moderate anxiety or depression, social anxiety, loneliness, or difficulty connecting socially
  • Relationship concerns such as conflicts with a roommate, romantic partner, or friend
  • Adjusting to being at college or experiencing a new culture
  • Exploration and support around identity concerns such as sexual orientation, race or gender identity
  • Support for students who experience any form of oppression/discrimination
  • Low self-esteem or self confidence
  • Academic stress or learning concerns
  • Lifestyle habits involving sleep, eating or alcohol/drug use
  • Concerns related to your family
  • Grief or loss
  • Initial stabilization and support related to an upsetting or traumatic life event or experience

Some students may have needs that require services beyond what the Center offers.

CAPS does not provide care for chronic conditions that require intensive and recurring repeated or continuous visits. After an initial consultation, we may refer a student to more appropriate services in the community if the consultation reveals that the student's needs exceed what our evidence based model and staff expertise can accommodate.

Most students find that they meet their counseling goals within 5-10 sessions. At CAPS we have the opportunity to offer evidence based counseling services in approximately 12 sessions per academic year. If students require more than 12 sessions, alternative options (next steps) this will be discussed with their counselor.
