Application eligibility is as follows:

• Must have completed one full semester at Stony Brook or another institution of higher education (ie. first semester transfer students are eligible.)
• Must have minimum of a 2.7 cumulative GPA
• Must commit to the program for a full academic year (2024-2025)
• Must be enthusiastic about helping other students and developing your own leadership qualities through training and hands-on experience

Overview of FAQ:

• What do Commuter Assistants do (in a nutshell)?
  • Commuter Assistants (CAs) are campus leaders who are dedicated to helping other students have a great college experience; this is primarily accomplished by serving as peer-mentors to incoming commuter students, easing their transition to Stony Brook and throughout their first year at the institution. Commuter Assistants also play an integral part in the success of Commuter Student Services and Off-Campus Living (CSS & OCL) events and outreach initiatives, as well as that of Department of Student Community Development efforts, as a whole.
• What are the general expectations if accepted into the program?
  • Attend all training dates (Part I: May 10,  15 and 16, Part II:  August 1-2)
  • Attend full-day Retreat on Friday, June 28th
  • Cover multiple shifts throughout Week of Welcome(Fall semester: August 19-23; Spring semester: January 20-24) and attend pre-Welcome Week specific training sessions during the weeks of August 19th and January 20th, respectively (specifics TBD.)
  • Attend monthly team meetings (select Wednesdays during Campus Lifetime- exact dates to follow)
  • Hold one (1) outreach hour each week between 9:00 am and 5:00 pm as needed (specific direction will be given), selected based on your schedule
  • Prompt response and daily attention to all communications (emails, Google Calendar invitations, etc.)
  • Regular availability to communicate (phone, email, and/or in person) and provide in person campus tours for new student mentees over summer 2024 and winter 2025, as well as throughout the remainder of the academic year
  • Assist with preparation, face-to-face outreach, and facilitation of departmental events and programs
  • Help plan events encouraging campus involvement for commuter students and other special populations
  • Participate in recommended campus-wide leadership and professional development opportunities

  **We will be holding a Recruitment Mixer (not required, but strongly encouraged!) on 2/28/23 from 1:00-2:00PM in SAC 311- stop by and socialize with some of our current Commuter Assistants, grab a snack, and learn more about the program! (This does NOT count as a required an info session- if you are interested in becoming a Commuter Assistant, you must attend an info session)

Submit pre-recorded interview videos via SparkHire.
The link for this portal will be provided at the close of the application (step 2.) Please reach out regarding any questions or concerns about using this platform.

Your application will be considered complete when the above steps have been recorded,
and a reference has been submitted on your behalf by your indicated point of contact.
All components of the application are due by March 18TH, 2024 at 5:00PM.
