Chapter History

The Student African American Sisterhood National Organization, Inc. (SAAS) began on the campus of Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis in 2004-2005 as a grassroots effort to respond to the desires of African American female students to develop a network of academic and personal support.  The organization grew tremendously in Fall 2006 as it was reorganized and began to provide intentional programming coupled with intensive academic, social and personal support strategies. Today, 18 SAAS chapters have been created to empower African Ameican and Latina students in both high school and college through their six core principles: Academic Excellence, Social Unity, Cultural Enrichment, Personal Development, Service Learning, and Financial Affairs. 

Chartered on November 4, 2016, the Stony Brook Chapter of SAAS is a campus initiative to promote the academic growth, personal development, and success of underrepresented female students. SAAS is the first chapter in the US Northeast, the State of New York, and the State University of New York System.  We are proud to have Councilwoman Valerie M. Cartright pronounce March 9th as "SAAS Day," an annual celebration in the Town of Brookhaven.  The Stony Brook Chaptr is coordinated by the Office of Multicultural Affairs.
