Undergraduate Opportunities
It pays to be engaged! Student Engagement & Activities is looking for enthusiastic, passionate and driven students willing to be a source of support and information for student organization leaders. Apply to be a Student Engagement Support Specialist today to champion involvement, leadership, and campus traditions! Specialists will work independently and collaboratively on projects that enhance the student experience and engage the campus community through the planning and execution of training and events, student organization advisement and support, and outreach initiatives. These positions allow students to give back to the community in supporting and developing student leaders, and helping students find their place on campus. You will be challenged to think critically and work among a team of dedicated student leaders and staff. The Student Engagement Support Specialists report to the Coordinators for Student Engagement & Activities. This position is for the 2024-2025 academic year, with the possibility to be renewed for a following year.
Responsibilities (include but are not limited to):
- Student Organization Support: Provide student voice, and assistance to enhance the quality of support of our 400+ recognized student organizations including:
- Work with an assigned caseload of student organizations to provide support and advisement to ensure success, adherence to departmental, University, and SUNY policies, and limit risk.
- Process incoming reservation requests through online reservations system, 25Live; ensure compliance with departmental policies and standards.
- Process forms and event requests through online club management system, SB Engaged.
- Manage correspondence with student organization leadership (reservation confirmations, fielding general inquiries, etc.).
- Serve as liaison between student organizations and professional staff.
- Assist with development and implementation of training, workshops, resources, and special events to support our student organizations and their leaders.
- Administrative Duties: Assist in the daily office operations of the Department of Student Engagement and Activities including:
- Answering office phones, responding to email inquiries, and walk-in inquiries.
- Serve on committees and represent the department on panels and presentations as needed.
- Assist with marketing, and assessment of events and departmental services.
- Attend supervisory, and departmental meetings and training.
- Event Planning and Management: Plan Involvement Fairs, Student Life Awards, and more! Provide on-site support at student, departmental events, and campus traditions as needed, which sometimes take place in the evening and/or on weekends.
Skills and Qualifications We Look For

Required:
- Qualify and be approved for Work Study for the 2024-2025 academic year.
- Desire to support student organizations leaders in managing their club and contributing to campus life.
- Desire to be a leader and role-model, including on-campus, online and in the community.
- Be enrolled as a matriculated undergraduate student at Stony Brook University for 2024-2025
- Maintain a minimum GPA of 2.25.
- Maintain appropriate conduct standing. A sanction of University Probation or higher, or a sanction of restriction from holding leadership positions will disqualify candidates.
- Excellent customer service and communication skills (verbally, written, and interpersonally).
- Punctual, dependable, and adaptable.
- Demonstrated effective use of organizational and planning skills, and managing workflow.
- Proficiency using various softwares, social media platforms, Google Apps, etc.
- Previous experience working collaboratively as part of a diverse team, and both establishing and maintaining effective peer and supervisory relationships.
- Time Commitment:
- Expected to work approximately 8-10 hours per week
- Willing and able to work both the fall and spring semester. Must be able to maintain an established work schedule.

What You Gain, Time Commitment, & Remuneration
This is an hourly paid position for undergraduate students who qualify for work study. Student Engagement Specialists will:
- Expected to work approximately 8-10 hours per week at the rate of $16 per hour. Tuition remission, health insurance, and retirement benefits are not included as part of this position. Hours and pay rate subject to change based on yearly budget and scheduling approvals.
- Play a substantial role in the support and management of clubs/organizations, and student life.

The Event Coordinator position is designed to offer students an opportunity to learn how to plan, execute, and assess programs with the assistance of other student coordinators. Event Coordinators will report to the Coordinator for Student Engagement and Activities and aim to specifically enhance the quality of programming and campus life.
Position tasks include, but are not limited to:
- Assist in the development, planning, and execution of weekly events for the Department of Student Engagement & Activities
- Provide staffing support at 1-2 weekly in-person evening events (typically on Fridays and Saturdays) including set-up, management, and breakdown of events as necessary
- Serve as a lead event coordinator for multiple events per semester which includes creating a marketing plan to be shared with the Branding and Marketing team
- Be a present and active member at weekly staff meetings by providing ideas, post-event evaluations and contributing to success of overall programming
- Attend and participate at trainings and supervision meetings
- Represent Student Engagement & Activities at campus events as needed
- Other duties as assigned
- In addition to the event coordinator responsibilities, staff members may take on a functional assignments including but not limited to
- Inventory Management
- Assessment
- Internal Operations
- Volunteer Recruitment
- Tasks will be assigned closer to the beginning of the semester during training
Remuneration
This is an hourly paid student assistant position. The successful candidate will be expected to work approximately 8-10 hours per week at the tentative rate of $16/hour. Hours and pay rate subject to change based on yearly budget and scheduling approvals. This position can also be done through internship credit and Federal Work Study.

Skills and Qualifications

Are you a student leader who is knowledgeable about running a club and wants to help others? Student Engagement and Activities is looking for enthusiastic, passionate, and well informed club leaders who are willing to be a source of support and inspiration for student organization leaders.
Apply to be a Student Excellence and Leadership Intern (SEAL) and become a peer mentor for our student leaders to learn and navigate the process of club and organization management. The 'SEAL' will work independently and collaboratively amongst a small team of involved leaders just like you to create projects to enhance the student experience through the planning and execution of training for student leaders. The 'SEAL' will mentor student leaders throughout the new club process, provide resources, and create content that will be shared amongst leadership to use and implement in their club. You will be challenged to think creatively, critically, and use your experience to enhance how we, in Student Engagement and Activities, provide training to our 400+ clubs on campus.
Responsibilities (include but are not limited to):
- Student Organization Support: Provide a student voice and assistance to enhance the quality of student leader training by providing support to our 400+ recognized student organization including:
- Auditing compliance trainings for our student leaders (Prevent Zone, Student Organization Essential trainings)
- Serve as a liaison between student organization and professional staff for support needed in our club community
- Build curriculum for student organization training (in person, online, hybrid)
- Enhance, assist and work alongside professional staff in a peer-to-peer training for our New Club Cohort Process
- Execute with workshops for club leadership as a presenter or co-presenter
- Research best practices that affect clubs and organizations and make suggestions for changes to current policies
- Assist in the development and creation of a Digital Leadership Library
- Other duties as assigned
Remuneration
This position is for academic credit only. Students hired as interns will be expected to work 12 hours per week and will earn up to 6 academic credits (3 per semester) for their successful completion of EXT 288 or EXT 488. Tuition remission, health insurance, and retirement benefits are not included as part of this position.
SEAL Interns will be provided with Student Engagement and Activities swag, a stole (if graduating) and will be part of the Student Life staff within our Divisions.
Skills and Qualifications
Required:
- Must be enrolled as a full time, undergraduate student at Stony Brook University
- Must minimally be of sophomore class standing by the date of employment
- Applications must be in good judicial and academic standing, with a minimum GPA of 2.25
- Proficiency in using Google Apps and various social media platforms
- Demonstrated effective use of organizational and planning skills, and managing workflow in a fast paced work environment.
- Must be registered for either EXT 288 or EXT 488 through the Career Center
- Demonstrated ability to prioritize multiple projects and to work autonomously
- Excellent customer service and communication skills (verbally, written, and interpersonally)
- Available for staff training
- Willing and able to work the full academic year
Preferred:
