Military Deployment Policy

The following is in the event of military recall to active duty:

This information is to assist the Veteran/Student in making their decision if asked to report for mobilization into an active duty status. The student is encouraged to notify the appropriate departmental academic Dean. The academic departments will attempt to work with those individuals asked to mobilized.

Stony Brook University will recognize one of the following upon student request:

• 1. Student Status
  Student Status

  A student/veteran may remain in a student status for duration not to exceed 30 days from date of activation (active duty). In the event the service member exceeds this duration, the University will reserve the right to withdrawal student to avoid any hardships (academic and financial).

  Procedure

  Students are responsible for notifying the Office of Veterans Affairs at Stony Brook University of activation/return date and submit appropriate official documentation of mobilization.

  By Default: If the Office of Veterans Affairs does not receive notification of students return to the University, s/he will be automatically withdrawn from the University with an effective date of mobilization.

• 2. Withdrawals

  Withdrawals

  If the student elects to be withdrawn s/he will receive a "W" on their academic transcript. However, the University will note the reason for withdrawal "Active Duty Military Recall". To be eligible for financial review, detailed documentation must be submitted to the Office of Students Accounts.

  Procedure

  The student must submit a written request to be withdrawn from classes with official documentation of active duty mobilization to the Office of Veterans Affairs at Stony Brook University.

• 3. Cancellation

  Cancellation

  If the student elects to exercise the Cancellation option, s/he will be asked to return all cash monies received from the University. At which time, the University will notify the appropriate funding agencies (i.e. government, state and financial institutions) of student's status and all monies will be returned accordingly. To be eligible for financial review, detailed documentation must be submitted to the Office of Students Accounts.

  Procedure

  The student must submit a written request to exercise their cancellation of attendance with official documentation of active duty mobilization to the Office of Veterans Affairs at Stony Brook University.
