About the Program

SBU's faculty-led program in Greece offers full immersion in language and culture. Students start with online classes for one week and then travel to Greece to continue the program. Every step outside the classroom is a step on a historic site. Students will learn about and visit many famous landmarks including the Acropolis, Syntagma Square, the Panathenaic Stadium, Lycabettus Hill and a number of museums. There will be field trips to sites of historical and cultural significance, some of which are designated UNESCO World Heritage sites.

Academic Information
Course Information

Students are required to take one Greek language course in conjunction with EUR 447. Students will earn a total of 6 credits

EUR 447: This course is intended for anyone who wishes to explore Modern Greek culture and Civilization in the context of the European regions. Important aspects of contemporary Greek culture and values will be examined along with elements of Greek language, literature, food, and arts. Students will experience living in Athens, capital of Greece, one of the countries of Europe, surrounded by significant monuments and museums. They will also travel to famous destinations of mainland Greece, including Nafplio, Mycenae, Epidaurus, Meteora, Delphi and Aegina.

GRK 121, Elementary Modern Greek I: An introduction to spoken and written Modern Greek, stressing pronunciation, speaking, comprehension, reading, and writing. Language Center supplements class work. The course is designed for students who have no prior knowledge of the language. Students who have had two or more years of Modern Greek in high school (or who has otherwise acquired an equivalent proficiency) may not take GRK 121 without written permission from the supervisor of the course. May not be taken for credit in addition to GRK 101.

GRK 122, Elementary Modern Greek II: An introduction to spoken and written Modern Greek, stressing pronunciation, speaking, comprehension, reading, and writing. Language Center supplements class work. May not be taken for credit in addition to GRK 101.

GRK 211, Intermediate Modern Greek I: Build proficiency in speaking, listening, reading, writing and grammar of the Greek language. Develop interpersonal, interpretive and presentational modes of communication. Explore how Greek culture influenced other Mediterranean cultures past and present. Emphasis on comparison of languages and cultures.

GRK 212, Intermediate Modern Greek II: Develop a functional competence in speaking, listening, reading and writing in interpersonal, interpretive and presentational modes of communication. Explore the Greek language and culture and how it integrates and compares with other languages and cultures. Focus on the use of the Greek language in both the university and global setting through different modes of media, including film, literature, music and print.

Academic Policies
- Credits earned on this program will calculate toward a student's GPA at Stony Brook University. Non-SBU students are advised to check their home university policy on grade and credit transfer.
- Students following the Stony Brook Curriculum (SBC) may request for GLO and EXP+ in addition to requirements fulfilled by their coursework.
